History
On October 1, 1881, Carl Schenck founded his 'Eisengießerei und Waagenfabrik' in Darmstadt — the present-day Carl Schenck AG. As early as 1863, 'Commerzienrat Carl Heinrich Johann Schenck' had co-founded the Mannheim firm 'Schenck, Mohr & Elsässer', where automobile pioneer Carl Benz also worked as a technical employee. In 1881 Schenck left the Mannheim firm to found his own scale factory in Darmstadt. The founder's prudence and early international orientation, along with a presence at world expositions, brought early success and a good order situation for the young Darmstadt enterprise. Dynamic development led to an expansion of the program into materials handling in 1902, and in 1907 development and production of balancing machines began. Toward the end of the 1920s the product range was expanded with power brakes and brake test benches, while the iron foundry was closed. After World War II, the Darmstadt company's steep upward trajectory began, expanding enormously and making a name for itself worldwide. Schenck products were delivered to all parts of the world and used in numerous industries. Sales and production facilities were established in many countries. At the Darmstadt site, this success allowed investment above all in technical development, further consolidating the firm's pioneering role in metrology, scale construction, and testing, conveying and balancing technology.
