Carl Sauter Pianofortemanufaktur

SAUTER (Carl Sauter Pianofortemanufaktur) is a German piano manufacturer based in Spaichingen. According to its official website, it has stood for exclusive piano-making craftsmanship "Made in Germany" since 1819 and describes itself as the oldest still-producing piano manufactory in the world. Its instruments are presented as combining traditional handcraft, technical innovation and timeless design, and its range includes grand pianos and upright pianos as well as design editions and custom-made instruments.

According to the company's official history page, the tradition began with Johann Grimm, a young journeyman carpenter from Spaichingen with a deep passion for musical culture. In 1813 he went to Vienna, then the capital of music and instrument making, to learn piano making from Johann Andreas Streicher and his wife Nanette Stein. After six years of intensive training, Johann Grimm returned to Spaichingen full of drive and ideas. In 1819 he began building table pianos there, marking the beginning of a piano-making tradition that continues to this day. As successor and heir of Johann Grimm, his nephew Carl Sauter developed the workshop into a manufactory from 1846. The official website states that SAUTER has stood for exclusive piano-making craftsmanship "Made in Germany" since 1819 and describes it as the oldest still-producing piano manufactory in the world, located in Spaichingen.
