Overview

The Carl-Cranz-Gesellschaft e.V. (CCG) is a German non-profit registered association dedicated to technical and scientific continuing education. Named after Carl Cranz, the founder of modern ballistics and a professor of technical physics at the Technical University of Berlin, the organization was established on 9 December 1960 under the patronage of then Defense Minister Franz Josef Strauß. Its founding purpose was to provide defense-technology training and further education for university graduates and specialists from industry and the military, in the context of the build-up of the Bundeswehr and corresponding research and development capacities. The first defense-technology courses were held in 1963 in Weil am Rhein and Oberpfaffenhofen near Munich. Today the CCG offers a broad spectrum of seminars that extends well beyond defense-technology training. With more than 100 seminars per year, it covers fields such as digital communication, computer science, sensor technology, command and reconnaissance, transport and traffic systems, defense and security, materials science and technology, and interdisciplinary topics. Seminars are held at relevant locations including universities, test facilities, companies and armed forces installations in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, with a notable partnership with the German-French Research Institute in Saint-Louis. The courses are led by experts from universities, research institutions and industry, and are aimed primarily at engineers and natural scientists. About 25% of participants come from abroad, mainly from the Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland. The association is supported by a board of trustees (Kuratorium) that includes representatives of research institutions such as the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and Fraunhofer Institutes, as well as leading German defense companies including Airbus Defence and Space, Diehl Defence, ESG, Hensoldt, IABG, Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and Rheinmetall, which are also affiliated as cooperative members. The CCG has been financially supported by the Federal Ministry of Defence. In recent years it has expanded its offerings beyond the defense-technology framework into the civilian sector, for example with seminars on age-appropriate assistance systems for seniors, REACH, and materials modeling in automotive engineering.
