Overview
The Capanna Adula UTOE (German: Adulahütte UTOE) is an alpine mountain hut in the Adula Alps of the Swiss canton of Ticino. It is owned and operated by the Bellinzona section of the Unione Ticinese Operai Escursionisti (UTOE), a Ticino hiking and mountaineering association founded in 1919, and it sits within the umbrella of the Federazione Alpinistica Ticinese (FAT). The hut is named after the Rheinwaldhorn, known in Italian as the Adula, the prominent peak that rises to its east. The hut stands at 2,392 metres above sea level, south above the Val Carassin and south-east of the Passo di Piotta, west of the Rheinwaldhorn and above the Val Soia, an eastern side valley of the Blenio valley. It lies on the territory of the municipality of Blenio in the upper Blenio valley and offers 58 sleeping places in two rooms. It is a base for numerous hikes and mountaineering tours in the surrounding Adula Alps. Access in summer is on foot: about four hours from the Lago di Luzzone dam (1,609 m), three hours from the dam in Val Carassin (car park at Cumpiètt, 1,707 m), four hours from Olivone (902 m), and four hours on the steep path from Dangio (801 m). In winter the hut can be reached from Dangio and Ghirone in about six hours each. The building was constructed in 1923 and extended in 1983 and 2002. As one of the five alpine huts managed by UTOE Bellinzona — alongside Albagno, Bovarina, Gesero and Tamaro — the Capanna Adula UTOE is part of a network of mountain refuges that serve as rest stops, starting points for excursions and destinations in their own right. UTOE Bellinzona, with around 2,000 members, is one of the largest hiking associations in Ticino and one of the largest associations in Bellinzona, and is one of the 16 alpine and hiking clubs that make up the Federazione Alpinistica Ticinese.
History
The Capanna Adula UTOE was built in 1923 by the Bellinzona section of the Unione Ticinese Operai Escursionisti (UTOE), an association founded in 1919 that has always worked in favour of the mountains. The hut was named after the Rheinwaldhorn, called Adula in Italian, the dominant peak of the surrounding Adula Alps. It was extended in 1983 and again in 2002, increasing its capacity and improving facilities for visitors. Today it is one of five alpine huts managed by UTOE Bellinzona, together with Albagno, Bovarina, Gesero and Tamaro. UTOE Bellinzona, with around 2,000 members, is one of the largest hiking associations in Ticino and one of the largest associations in Bellinzona, and is one of the 16 alpine and hiking clubs that form the Federazione Alpinistica Ticinese (FAT). The hut continues to serve as a rest stop, a starting point for excursions and a destination in its own right for hikers and climbers exploring the upper Blenio valley and the Adula Alps.
