Overview

Capanna Sasc Furä (also known as Sasc-Furä-Hütte) is a mountain hut of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC), Sektion Bergell, located at 1,904 metres above sea level in the Val Bondasca, a side valley of the Bergell (Val Bregaglia) in the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland. Built in 1960 on a terrace at the foot of the Piz Badile, the hut serves as a base for climbers tackling the famous granite routes of the Piz Badile, including the North Edge and the Cassin Route on the north-east face. It is also a destination for hikers on the Sentiero Alpino Bregaglia Sud, the Passo Trubinasca and Pizzo Trubinasca, and for those seeking solitude and alpine scenery. The hut is owned by the Sektion Bergell of the Swiss Alpine Club and is typically staffed from early July to the end of September. It offers accommodation, meals and a terrace with views of the surrounding peaks. The hut warden as of the official website is Daniela Rota, based in Vicosoprano. The hut has a long history of access challenges: until 2011 it was connected to the Sciora Hut via the high trail 'Viale' beneath the Vadret del Cengal glacier. After rockfall activity increased in the north face of Piz Cengalo, the connecting path was closed in 2011, and a major rockfall in December 2011 and an even larger one in August 2017 caused the hut to be closed from 2017 through 2018. A new high approach was completed and officially opened on 6 July 2019, restoring access. In summer 2026, the old and easier approach through Val Bondasca was reopened with new bridges. Capanna Sasc Furä is a classic alpine club hut, not a commercial hotel chain, but it operates as a brand-like entity with its own website, booking system, and identity within the SAC network. It caters to an international clientele of mountaineers, hikers and nature lovers. The hut's location provides access to Piz Badile (3,308 m), Piz Cengalo (3,367 m) and Pizzo Trubinasca (2,918 m), as well as transitions to the Gianetti Hut, Sciora Hut and Rifugio Brasca. The hut is a member of the SAC hut network and follows the club's reservation and pricing policies.

History

The Sasc-Furä-Hütte was built in 1960 by the Sektion Bergell of the Swiss Alpine Club on a terrace at 1,904 m above sea level at the foot of the Piz Badile in the Val Bondasca, a side valley of the Bergell. For decades it served as a key base for climbers and hikers, and until 2011 it was connected to the Sciora Hut (also in Val Bondasca) by the high trail 'Viale' that passed beneath the Vadret del Cengal glacier. In summer 2011, rockfall activity increased in the north face of Piz Cengalo, prompting a geological assessment and the closure of the direct path between the Sciora and Sasc-Furä huts beneath that face. In December 2011, a major rockfall of 1.5–2 million cubic metres of rock occurred from the Cengalo north face. Despite the closure, the connecting path continued to be used. In August 2017, an even larger rockfall, possibly nearly twice as large, struck; two of the eight buried mountaineers are believed to have been on the connecting path between the Sciora and Sasc-Furä huts. As a result of the 2017 event, the hut's approach from Val Bondasca was also closed, and the hut remained closed from that event through 2018. A new high approach was completed and officially opened on 6 July 2019, and with the reopening of the hut, the route over the Passo della Trubinasca also became available again. Many climbers, mostly aiming for Piz Badile, continued to use the old approach through Val Bondasca, but were on their own when crossing the Bondasca stream. In summer 2026, thanks to new bridges, the old and easier approach from Val Bondasca was re-established and officially opened. The hut is typically staffed from early July to the end of September and is owned by the Sektion Bergell of the SAC. The current hut warden is Daniela Rota.
