Overview

Candia was a Dutch East India Company trading vessel constructed in Rotterdam in 1788 for the company's Chamber of Rotterdam. It belonged to the class of large Dutch East Indiamen used to transport cargo, personnel, and supplies between the Netherlands and Asian possessions and trading centers. The ship was approximately 1,150 tons and measured 45.73 metres in length, dimensions that placed it among the substantial ocean-going vessels operated by the VOC during the late eighteenth century. The vessel's documented operational career was brief. On 26 October 1790, Candia departed from the island of Goeree in the Dutch Republic on a voyage to Batavia, the VOC's principal administrative center in Southeast Asia. Dirk Dirksz Varkevisser commanded the expedition. Before taking charge of Candia, Varkevisser had commanded the VOC ship Middelwijk on voyages in 1786 and 1787. Candia left Europe with 186 people aboard. The voyage included a call at Cape Town, an important resupply and staging point on the VOC's long-distance route. Candia reached the Cape on 13 February 1791. By that point, three people had died during the passage from Europe. Twenty people were disembarked at Cape Town, after which the ship resumed its journey on 23 March. It reached Batavia on 15 June 1791, completing the only recorded voyage in which it traveled from Europe to Asia. Candia did not return to the Netherlands. In 1796, it was sold in Batavia and subsequently broken up. Its history therefore reflects the final decades of the VOC's intercontinental shipping system: the ship was built for a major chartered trading corporation, completed a long and difficult outward passage, and ended its working life in Asia rather than making a return voyage. The vessel is also documented visually through a 1789 painting by the Dutch maritime artist Gerrit Groenewegen, made while Candia was still in Dutch waters near Rotterdam. The image provides evidence of the ship's appearance and illustrates the form of late-eighteenth-century Dutch spiegelretourschepen, or mirror-stern return ships.

History

Candia was built in 1788 at Rotterdam for the Chamber of Rotterdam of the Dutch East India Company, the VOC. The ship was designed as a large Dutch East Indiaman, a type of vessel used by the company for long-distance transport between the Dutch Republic and Asia. Its reported dimensions were approximately 1,150 tons and 45.73 metres in length. These characteristics made it suitable for carrying cargo and people over the extended route to Batavia, the VOC's principal center in the East Indies. The ship's only recorded voyage to Asia began on 26 October 1790, when Candia departed from Goeree under the command of Dirk Dirksz Varkevisser. The departure complement numbered 186 people. Varkevisser was an experienced VOC commander who had previously led the ship Middelwijk during voyages in 1786 and 1787. The passage to the Cape of Good Hope was difficult: three people died before the ship reached Cape Town on 13 February 1791. During the stop, 20 people were disembarked. Candia left Cape Town again on 23 March 1791 and arrived in Batavia on 15 June. Unlike many VOC ships intended to make a return passage, Candia never came back to the Netherlands. The ship remained in Asia and was sold in Batavia in 1796. It was then broken up, bringing its operational life to an end. The record illustrates how VOC vessels could be retired or disposed of in Asia after an outward voyage, particularly during the corporation's final period. The VOC itself was dissolved at the end of the eighteenth century, although the reference material does not establish a direct connection between Candia's sale and the company's formal dissolution. Candia is also represented in a maritime painting by Gerrit Groenewegen, produced in 1789 while the vessel was still in Dutch waters near Rotterdam. The depiction is significant because it records the ship before its sole documented Asian voyage and offers a visual impression of the Dutch spiegelretourschip design. Together, the construction record, voyage account, command history, and surviving image provide a concise picture of a late-VOC East Indiaman whose career was concentrated in one outward expedition.

Products and positioning

Mass-market French dairy brand combining family nutrition, French milk sourcing, farmer-cooperative ownership, broad retail distribution and practical product and packaging innovation.

  • Milk · 1985

    GrandLait

GrandLait is Candia’s principal everyday milk platform and one of its most strongly identified products. Developed by Sodiaal farmers in 1985, it is positioned around French milk, cooperative organization and quality controls. The line includes conventional, organic and family-oriented variants, with formats covering common household uses. Its marketing gives greater prominence to the origin and organization of the supply chain than a purely generic commodity product would.

  • Flavored milk drinks

    Candy’Up

Candy’Up is Candia’s child- and family-oriented flavored milk range. It extends the brand beyond plain household milk into sweetened cocoa and other flavored dairy beverages designed for snacks, breakfast and on-the-go consumption. The line has historically helped Candia address younger consumers and build a more accessible, indulgent side of the portfolio while remaining based on milk as its core ingredient.

  • Enriched and functional milk

    Viva

Viva is a Candia milk line associated with enriched or nutritionally differentiated products. It represents the brand’s long-standing effort to move beyond standard milk through fortification and targeted nutritional propositions. Depending on the market and period, products under the broader Candia portfolio have addressed vitamins, minerals and other family nutrition needs.

  • Organic milk

    GrandLait Bio

GrandLait Bio is Candia’s organic milk offering, positioned around certified organic production and French sourcing. The range reflects the brand’s response to consumer demand for organic dairy products and more transparent agricultural standards. Candia has also used the organic line to showcase packaging development, including its aluminium-free UHT carton introduced in 2019.

  • Regional milk

    Le Lait de ma Région

Le Lait de ma Région is a regional-provenance proposition that links milk collection and processing to local or regional supply areas. It is designed to make the geographic relationship between farms, dairies and consumers more visible. The range supports Candia’s broader positioning around French collection, territorial presence and the cooperative network of Sodiaal producers.

  • Food-service dairy products

    Candia Professional

Candia Professional serves restaurants, catering businesses and culinary professionals with milk, cream and other dairy formats designed for professional handling and recipe use. The range emphasizes French production, technical consistency and formats suited to food-service operations rather than household retail. It extends Candia’s expertise into gastronomy and institutional consumption.

  • Dairy fats

    Cream and butter

Candia’s industrial dairy activities include cream and butter alongside liquid milk. These products arise partly from the composition of the French milk market, where semi-skimmed milk is the dominant household format and processing generates cream. Candia sells consumer and professional cream products and participates in butter production within Sodiaal’s broader dairy network.

  • Specialized nutrition · 1990

    Infant and follow-on milk

Candia has historically developed infant, follow-on and growth-milk products, including liquid formats. This segment extends the brand’s family positioning into early-childhood nutrition and requires specialized formulation, quality control and manufacturing. Some specialized nutrition activities have been managed within the wider Sodiaal group and may not all remain marketed under the Candia name in every market.
