Canaport LNG

Canaport LNG is a state-of-the-art LNG receiving and regasification terminal in Saint John, NB, and is the first LNG terminal in Canada, sending out natural gas to both Canadian and U.S. markets. It has a maximum send out capacity of 1.2 billion cubic feet (BCF) or 28 million cubic metres of natural gas per day, enough to heat 5 million homes. LNG arrives by ship and is regasified, then distributed via the Brunswick Pipeline.

Construction began in 2005. The first LNG shipment was received in 2009. A third tank was completed in 2010. In 2021, Repsol achieved 100% ownership. In 2001, Irving Oil applied for a permit to add LNG capability to Irving Canaport. In 2004, Irving Oil submitted an EIA application. Irving Oil and Repsol announced a partnership to develop an LNG terminal. In 2005, they signed definitive agreements and formed a new company, Saint John LNG. Construction began in September 2005. In 2006, EPC contracts were awarded. In 2007, plans for a third tank were announced. In 2009, operations began with the first LNG shipment via the Bilbao Knutsen, and the facility was the first on the East Coast to receive a Q-Flex vessel from Qatar.
