Overview
Canal+ S.A., formerly known as Groupe Canal+, is a French media and telecommunications group headquartered in Issy-les-Moulineaux near Paris. Its central consumer brand is Canal+, a subscription television and over-the-top video service that combines premium films, original series, sports, documentaries, entertainment and third-party channels. The group also distributes television services and digital products supplied by other companies, operates pay-TV platforms in several regions, and owns production and distribution businesses including StudioCanal. The original Canal+ channel launched in France in November 1984, at a time when the country had only a small number of government-controlled television channels. Co-founded by André Rousselet and Pierre Lescure, it differentiated itself through subscription financing, premium cinema, sports and distinctive original programming. The channel became known for an irreverent editorial style associated with programs such as Les Guignols de l'Info, Nulle part ailleurs, Groland and Les Deschiens. Its programming model and aggressive subscription marketing helped it grow from a slow initial start to nearly three million subscribers by 1989. Canal+ expanded beyond a single French channel during the late 1980s and 1990s. Canal+ Productions was established in 1987 to co-produce films, while Canal+ Horizons was created in 1990 to develop operations in Africa. CanalSatellite, formed in 1991 and launched as a digital satellite platform in 1996, extended the group’s reach beyond cable coverage and developed into the Canalsat service. The group also entered European markets and participated in the development of international pay-TV ventures, including Premiere in Germany with partners. Film production and rights ownership became a major strategic pillar. Canal+ was required to direct part of its revenue toward French film production and became one of the country’s most important sources of cinema financing. Its production activities were consolidated under StudioCanal, which later developed a substantial international production, distribution and film-library business. The group acquired the library of Carolco Pictures in 1996 and has subsequently operated through production companies and distribution businesses in Europe and North America. Vivendi acquired Canal+ in December 2000, and Canal+ operated for many years as part of the Vivendi group. During the 2000s and 2010s it reorganized parts of its production portfolio, expanded digital distribution, supported online-media initiatives and entered new pay-TV territories. The acquisition of M7 Group, announced in 2019, strengthened its presence in the Benelux and Central Europe. Canal+ also entered an exclusive French distribution arrangement with Disney before the launch of Disney+ in France in 2020. As part of Vivendi’s corporate separation, Groupe Canal+ became Canal+ S.A. on 9 December 2024. The company began trading on the London Stock Exchange on 16 December 2024, marking its transition from a Vivendi subsidiary to an independently listed entity. Its current business scope spans subscription television, streaming, channel distribution, sports and entertainment rights, film production, film distribution, content libraries and international pay-TV operations. The referenced material describes the group as serving more than 26 million subscribers in 50 countries, although the applicable reporting date and financial source are not specified here.
History
Canal+ began as a French subscription television channel in November 1984. André Rousselet and Pierre Lescure helped establish the service during a period when French television was dominated by government-owned channels. The channel’s subscription model enabled it to offer premium films, sports and distinctive original programming. Early growth was supported by marketing, favorable regulatory conditions and programming that combined French productions with popular imported entertainment. Alain de Greef joined in 1986 and became a major influence on the channel’s editorial identity. Under his programming leadership, Canal+ developed a reputation for satire, informality and anti-conformist entertainment. Its successful programs included Les Guignols de l’Info, Nulle part ailleurs, Groland and Les Deschiens. By 1989 the service had almost three million subscribers, and the company had begun international expansion into Belgium, Spain, Germany and Africa. The group moved into production because acquiring Hollywood rights was expensive and because French regulation required substantial investment in domestic cinema. Canal+ Productions was formed in 1987, followed by Ellipse Programs later that year. Canal+ Horizons was established in 1990 to develop African activities. Canal+ also participated in the creation of Premiere in Germany with Bertelsmann and Kirch. In 1990 Canal+ Productions was renamed Le Studio Canal+, and it released its first film, The Double Life of Veronique, directed by Krzysztof Kieslowski. CanalSatellite was created in December 1991 and began satellite broadcasting in 1992. Its digital platform launched in 1996 with multiple channels and interactive services, later adding Canal+ branded services such as Canal+ Jaune and Canal+ Bleu. The group continued investing in film libraries and acquired the Carolco Pictures library in 1996 after that company’s collapse. In 1998 film, television and music activities were grouped under Canal+ Image, which was renamed StudioCanal in 2000. Canal+ Technologies was also created in 1999 to develop conditional-access and interactive-television technology. Vivendi acquired Canal+ in December 2000, and Canal+ became part of Vivendi Universal after Vivendi’s combination with Canal+ and Seagram. The following years involved organizational restructuring and the sale of several production assets. Ellipse Animation was sold to Média-Participations in 2003, while other StudioExpand activities were subsequently divested. CanalSatellite was renamed Canalsat in 2005. In the 2010s the group expanded digital access, made Canal+ services available through connected devices such as Xbox 360, and created CanalStart to support media and technology startups. Vincent Bolloré became chairman of Canal+ in 2015 as Vivendi increased its direct influence over the group. Canal+ later concentrated on international scale and platform distribution, including the 2019 acquisition of M7 Group. It also secured a major Disney distribution agreement in France. The company’s later operating model combined branded channels, streaming, third-party distribution, sports rights, cinema financing, StudioCanal production and international subsidiaries. On 9 December 2024 Groupe Canal+ was separated from Vivendi and became Canal+ S.A. The company began trading on the London Stock Exchange on 16 December 2024. Following the separation, the Bolloré family retained control of 30.4% of the wider conglomerate through Bolloré, according to the referenced Wikipedia material. Canal+ now presents itself as an international content and subscription platform group with operations across Europe, Africa, Asia-Pacific and French overseas territories.
