Overview
The Canada Green Building Council (CAGBC) is a national Canadian not-for-profit organization established in 2003 to accelerate the adoption of green-building practices. It works across the building and real-estate sectors to promote buildings, homes and communities that perform better environmentally while supporting healthier indoor environments and more efficient use of energy and resources. CAGBC emerged from Canada's earlier participation in the United States Green Building Council network. Before the national council was created, Canadian involvement in the green-building movement included British Columbia's participation in the USGBC Cascadia Chapter. The creation of CAGBC provided Canada with a dedicated national organization for advocacy, education, standards development and market transformation. The organization was founded by Thomas Mueller, Kevin Hydes of Introba, formerly Integral Group, Joe Van Belleghem, Jon Hobbs, formerly of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, and Peter Busby of Perkins+Will Canada. Mueller became the council's President and Chief Executive Officer. CAGBC is also a member of the World Green Building Council, connecting its Canadian activities with the broader international green-building movement. A central part of CAGBC's work is the promotion and development of rating systems and performance standards. It has promoted LEED certification in Canada through GBCI Canada and has supported additional programs covering zero-carbon buildings, energy-efficiency investment, sustainable sites, zero waste and occupant health. Its portfolio includes the Zero Carbon Building Standards, LEED, the Investor Confidence Project and Investor Ready Energy Efficiency certification, TRUE zero-waste certification, SITES and the WELL Building Standard. These programs give building owners, developers, designers, investors and operators frameworks for measuring and improving environmental and human-performance outcomes. CAGBC also contributes to professional recognition and industry development through its awards programs. The CAGBC Awards include Green Building Awards, Leadership Awards and the Andy Kesteloo Memorial Student Project Award. Together, these programs recognize projects, organizations, professionals and students that contribute to the advancement of sustainable building practice in Canada. The council's role is not that of a conventional consumer brand or commercial construction company. It operates as an industry association, standards promoter, education platform and certification-related organization. Its influence comes from convening market participants, supporting voluntary performance systems and helping normalize higher standards for energy, carbon, materials, water, waste, indoor environmental quality and community sustainability. Its work spans new construction, existing buildings and wider community-scale development. CAGBC continues to operate nationally in Canada. The Canadian LEED Canada-NC v1.0 system, which closely paralleled the USGBC new-construction framework and covered sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, innovation in design and regional priorities, is no longer open for new registrations. Projects using that system had to submit for certification by October 31, 2022; newer projects register under LEED v4. This transition reflects the council's continuing relationship with evolving international green-building rating systems.
History
The Canada Green Building Council was created in 2003 during the early expansion of organized green-building advocacy in Canada. Before its formation, Canadian participation in the emerging green-building movement was linked in part to the United States Green Building Council through British Columbia's membership in the USGBC Cascadia Chapter. A national Canadian council created a dedicated institutional base for advancing sustainable construction and building operations across the country. The founding group included Thomas Mueller, Kevin Hydes of Introba, formerly Integral Group, Joe Van Belleghem, Jon Hobbs, formerly of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, and Peter Busby of Perkins+Will Canada. Mueller became the organization's President and Chief Executive Officer. CAGBC subsequently developed as a national not-for-profit association and joined the World Green Building Council, giving it a formal connection to the international network of green-building councils. CAGBC's activities have combined advocacy, education, market development, standards promotion and certification support. Its mission is to lead and accelerate the transformation toward high-performing, healthy green buildings, homes and communities throughout Canada. Rather than constructing buildings itself, the council helps establish the frameworks through which owners, developers, architects, engineers, contractors, investors and occupants can assess environmental and human-performance outcomes. LEED has been one of the most visible parts of this work. CAGBC promoted LEED certification in Canada through GBCI Canada. The former LEED Canada-NC v1.0 framework closely resembled the USGBC new-construction version and addressed sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, innovation in design and regional priorities. Registration under the Canadian LEED rating systems later closed, and projects were required to submit for certification by October 31, 2022. New projects moved to LEED v4. The council's program portfolio expanded beyond conventional green-building design. It promoted the Zero Carbon Building Standards, which focus on reducing and addressing building-related carbon emissions, as well as the Investor Confidence Project and Investor Ready Energy Efficiency certification, which seek to improve confidence in energy-efficiency investment. Its associated or promoted systems also include TRUE for zero waste, SITES for sustainable land development and WELL for health and well-being in buildings. CAGBC has also supported professional culture and public recognition through its awards. The CAGBC Awards include Green Building Awards, Leadership Awards and the Andy Kesteloo Memorial Student Project Award. These awards recognize projects, teams, organizations, professionals and students contributing to Canada's green-building sector. Overall, the council has evolved from a national organizing effort into a broad platform for voluntary standards, certification-related services, industry education and market transformation. Its continuing role is to encourage better performance in Canadian buildings and communities, particularly in areas such as energy, carbon, water, materials, waste, indoor environmental quality and occupant health.

Products and positioning
A national, not-for-profit market-transformer and standards organization for sustainable, healthy and high-performing buildings, homes and communities in Canada.
Building performance standards
Zero Carbon Building Standards
CAGBC's Zero Carbon Building Standards provide a framework for evaluating and advancing low-carbon building performance in Canada. They are intended to guide owners, designers and operators toward buildings with substantially reduced carbon impacts, making operational emissions and broader decarbonization considerations central to performance evaluation.
Green-building rating system
LEED certification in Canada
CAGBC promotes LEED certification in Canada through GBCI Canada. The former Canadian LEED new-construction framework addressed site sustainability, water, energy, materials, indoor environmental quality, innovation and regional priorities. Registration under LEED Canada systems is closed, while new projects use LEED v4.
Energy-efficiency investment certification
Investor Confidence Project and Investor Ready Energy Efficiency
These programs address the investment side of building efficiency by providing processes and certification intended to improve the consistency, documentation and credibility of energy-efficiency projects for investors and other decision-makers.
Zero-waste certification
TRUE
TRUE is a zero-waste certification program promoted by CAGBC. It provides a structured way for facilities and organizations to assess waste prevention, diversion and resource-efficiency practices rather than treating waste management as a narrowly disposal-focused activity.
Sustainable landscape and site rating system
SITES
SITES is a sustainability framework for landscapes and land-development projects. Within CAGBC's portfolio of promoted systems, it extends sustainability assessment beyond the building envelope to site planning, ecological performance and responsible land use.
Health and well-being standard
WELL Building Standard
The WELL Building Standard focuses on the relationship between the built environment and human health and well-being. CAGBC promotes it alongside environmental and energy-oriented systems, broadening the definition of high-performing buildings to include occupant experience and health-related considerations.
Industry awards
CAGBC Awards
The CAGBC Awards recognize contributions to Canada's green-building industry. The award family includes Green Building Awards, Leadership Awards and the Andy Kesteloo Memorial Student Project Award, covering projects, organizations, professionals and student work.
