Overview

Château de Bacchus, historically known as the Campagne de Bacchus de Carpentras, is a wine-producing estate and listed historic residence in the hamlet of Serres, in the commune of Carpentras, Vaucluse, in the Rhône Valley of southern France. The property sits on the road to Le Barroux and has been inscribed as a monument historique since 4 July 2003. Its buildings and gardens reflect successive campaigns of construction and remodelling from the first half of the 17th century onward, with later work in the 18th century and a garden plan dated 1781. The estate was long associated with two rural landowning families: the Orléans la Motte, co-lords of Venasque and Saint-Didier, and the Bernard de Rémond Mormoiron, marquises of Modène. In 1881, M. Naquet of Avignon became owner. Today the domaine is a working vineyard and winery. According to its official website, the modern commercial operation dates its identity to 1958, under the motto 'Force & Passion', and presents itself as a producer in the Vallée du Rhône – Ventoux appellation. The domaine produces AOC Ventoux wines and has been farmed organically since 2009. Four grape varieties are used: Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault and Carignan. The range includes nine different cuvées: Château de Bacchus red, white and rosé; B de Bacchus red and rosé; Chapelle de Bacchus red; and Le Bacchus red, white and rosé. The estate combines its wine business with its heritage status as a protected historic monument, and its official site highlights press coverage in French media including Les Echos, Le Figaro, Ouest France, L'Hôtellerie-Restauration, Zepro SO GOOD PARIS and Terres de Vins.

History

The Campagne de Bacchus, now known as Château de Bacchus, is a historic estate in the hamlet of Serres, in the commune of Carpentras, Vaucluse, on the road to Le Barroux. It was successively the rural property of two families: the Orléans la Motte, co-lords of Venasque and Saint-Didier, and the Bernard de Rémond Mormoiron, marquises of Modène. The earliest construction work dates from the first half of the 17th century. A century later, the ground-floor rooms, the chapel and certain bedrooms were remodelled. A plan of the gardens survives from 1781. In September 1780, the château's garden was severely damaged by heavy flooding; until then, only haphazardly built dikes had prevented rising waters. In 1881, M. Naquet of Avignon became owner of the property. The château and its outbuildings have been listed as monuments historiques since 4 July 2003. The land is built on a secteur de taille et de capacité d'accueil limitées (Stecal), which permits construction in agricultural, natural and forested zones but makes any expansion project sensitive. An original portrait of François de Rémond de Modène was kept in the château, and numerous archives of the Modène family were conserved there until the 19th century. Today the estate is a wine-producing domaine making AOC Ventoux wines, farmed organically since 2009. Four grape varieties are used: Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault and Carignan. The domaine offers nine different cuvées: Château de Bacchus red, white and rosé; B de Bacchus red and rosé; Chapelle de Bacchus red; and Le Bacchus red, white and rosé. The official website presents the modern commercial identity as dating from 1958, with the motto 'Force & Passion', and highlights press coverage in Les Echos, Le Figaro, Ouest France, L'Hôtellerie-Restauration, Zepro SO GOOD PARIS and Terres de Vins.
