Overview

Camona da Maighels, known in German as the Maighelshütte, is a mountain hut operated by the Sektion Piz Terri of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC). It sits at 2,313 metres above sea level in the Val Maighels, a side valley of the Surselva in the Gotthard Group, within the municipality of Tujetsch in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. The hut lies near the source of the Rhine and serves hikers, mountaineers, climbers and ski tourers in both summer and winter seasons. The building began as a Swiss Army barracks called Cavradi West, constructed in 1943 as part of the Reduit defence strategy. In 1946 the Sektion Piz Terri of the SAC took over civilian operation and renamed it Maighelshütte. The Swiss Confederation sold the hut to the section for 50 francs in 1968. A water pipeline was built in 1969 and an extension followed in 1972. Today the hut offers 92 beds across several rooms and a dormitory, with meals, packed lunches and rental equipment for guests. The hut is a stage point on the Alpenkranzroute around the canton of Uri and is a base for numerous peaks and passes, including the Pazolastock, Badus (Six Madun), Piz Cavradi, Piz Borel, Piz Ravetsch, Piz Alv, the Maighelspass, Lolenpass and Bornengopass, as well as the Tomasee (Lai da Tuma), traditionally regarded as the source of the Rhine. Access is typically from the Oberalppass in about 1½ hours, from Tschamut in about 2½ hours, or from Andermatt via the Unteralptal and Lolenpass in about 5½ hours. The hut is also connected to neighbouring SAC huts such as the Vermigelhütte, Cadlimohütte, Treschhütte and Badushütte. As a commercial offering, the Maighelshütte provides accommodation, food and beverage service, and guiding information for alpine activities. It is managed by hut keepers Nora Honegger and Mauro Loretz, according to the official website. The hut operates seasonally: in summer from mid-June to mid-October, and in winter from late December to late April, with some weekend-only opening in December. Reservations are available online, and payment is accepted in cash, by card and via Twint. The hut also offers finken (slippers) for loan, lunch and sandwiches ordered the previous evening, and accommodates allergies with advance notice and a surcharge. Dogs are possible on request.

History

The Maighelshütte was originally built by the Swiss Army in 1943 as a soldiers' barracks named Cavradi West, part of the Reduit defence line. In 1946, the Sektion Piz Terri of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) took over the civilian operation of the barracks, which was renamed Maighelshütte. In 1968, the Swiss Confederation sold the hut to the Sektion Piz Terri for 50 francs. In the summer of 1969, an 850-metre water pipeline was constructed and renovation of the Maighelshütte began. An extension building was completed in 1972. The hut has since served as a base for alpine activities in the Val Maighels and surrounding Gotthard Group, and remains operated by the SAC Sektion Piz Terri.
