History

CMT's story begins at MIT. In 2004, Hari Balakrishnan and Sam Madden started the CarTel project at MIT, developing a mobile sensing system to collect and draw inferences from sensor data on mobile devices. In the following years they partnered with Boston taxi companies to measure traffic surface conditions and traffic using new methods for mobile telematics, research that won multiple 'best paper' and 'test of time' awards from top research conferences in Computer Science. In 2010, building on their academic success, they started Cambridge Mobile Telematics with Bill Powers.

Volvo Cars is introducing Safety Coach, an optional app that analyses driving behaviour such as braking, acceleration, cornering and speed and provides personalised safety coaching via the vehicle infotainment system and the Volvo Cars mobile app. It is being introduced initially in Sweden and Norway for most Volvo models from model year 2020 onwards, with customers able to opt in to share driving data with insurer Volvia for usage-based insurance offers.
