Overview

Calliola Conference & Event Center is a family-owned conference and event hotel located on the island of Rågö in Snappertuna, in the municipality of Raseborg, Finland. It sits by the sea between Raseborg Castle and the historic Fagervik ironworks and manor, and it operates year-round as a venue for conferences, seminars, weddings, celebrations and seaside getaways. The property offers accommodation for 76 guests, several meeting and event facilities, a restaurant serving Finnish local food, and four seafront saunas. Its setting in the Finnish archipelago, with peaceful surroundings and archipelago-style facilities, is central to its identity as a distinct and high-quality hospitality destination. The site has a long regional history. In the mid-19th century the Rågö estate, known as Rågöstrand, was separated from Jeppans Gård in the same village, and for about a hundred years it lived a quiet rural life in the village of Båsa in the former municipality of Snappertuna. The estate remained in the ownership of the same fishing family until the 1950s. Farming faded in the 1960s, and in the 1970s summer residents brought new life to the island; the bridge to Rågö improved the connection to the mainland. In that decade the renowned opera singer Timo Mustakallio fulfilled his dream by creating a holiday village on his archipelago estate, and it is said he quite literally filled the island with opera. Mustakallio was known internationally by the stage name Callio, a name that still lives on in Calliola. Art, nature and music have been an essential part of Calliola throughout its history. After Mustakallio, Calliola served in the 1980s as a recreational retreat for the management and personnel of SKOP Bank. A new chapter began in 1997, when Calliola became a conference and event hotel under the ownership of Maiju and Kari Kasanen, an entrepreneurial couple who started the current conference, restaurant and accommodation operations. The courtyard area comprises 16 buildings, some of them original buildings from the Rågö estate era and others newer conference, accommodation and restaurant facilities. Today Calliola markets itself as a unique conference and archipelago hotel by the sea, combining historic surroundings, Finnish local food and expert staff for meetings, weddings, celebrations and vacations.

History

Calliola's history reaches back to the mid-19th century, when the Rågö estate, known as Rågöstrand, was separated into its own independent estate from Jeppans Gård, located in the same village. For about a hundred years this old archipelago estate, today known as Calliola, lived its quiet rural life in the village of Båsa in the former municipality of Snappertuna. The Rågö estate, Rågöstrand, remained in the ownership of the same fishing family until the 1950s. The 1960s were a quieter time, as farming and the cultivation of the fields had gradually disappeared from the area. In the 1970s, summer residents brought new life to the island, and the connection to the mainland improved when the bridge to Rågö was built. With local pride, Snappertuna was known at the time as the most Swedish-speaking municipality in the world. In the 1970s, the renowned opera singer Timo Mustakallio fulfilled his dream by creating a holiday village on his archipelago estate. It is said that Mustakallio quite literally filled the island with opera. Art, nature and music have been an essential part of Calliola throughout its history. According to the story, Mustakallio was known internationally by the stage name Callio, a name that still lives on in Calliola. After Mustakallio, Calliola served in the 1980s as a recreational retreat for the management and personnel of SKOP Bank. A new chapter began in 1997, when Calliola became a conference and event hotel under the ownership of Maiju and Kari Kasanen, an entrepreneurial couple. The couple started the current conference, restaurant and accommodation operations at Calliola. The courtyard area comprises 16 buildings, some of them original buildings from the Rågö estate era and others newer conference, accommodation and restaurant facilities. Today Calliola operates year-round as a family-owned conference and event hotel on Rågö island in Raseborg, in the former municipality of Snappertuna. It offers inspiring and high-quality conference and hospitality services by the sea, providing a distinct setting for conferences, seminars, weddings and other celebrations, or for spending a vacation by the sea. The peaceful surroundings and the perfected archipelago-style facilities create a unique experience, finished by cheerful and expert staff and Finnish local food. Calliola offers various types of facilities, accommodation for 76 guests, and four seafront saunas, all year round.
