Callaway Vineyard & Winery was established in 1974 as the first winery in Temecula Valley. The founder, Ely Reeves Callaway Jr., was born on June 3, 1919, in LaGrange, Georgia. His father worked for the family firm which owned eight textile mills in the town. At age ten, he used money earned from delivering magazines to lease an acre of land and planted peach trees, making more than $700 from his first crop. In his early teens, he took up golf, inspired by his mother's cousin, Bobby Jones. After graduating from Emory University, he joined the US Army as a Reserve Officer during World War II.
