Overview

Cálamo is an independent bookshop based in Zaragoza, Spain, with more than 40 years of uninterrupted operation. It has built a reputation for the originality of its proposals and the professionalism of its work, making it a reference point both for its reading public and for booksellers and publishers in Spain, Latin America and Europe. The bookshop has never hidden its social, cultural and ecological commitment, believing in and betting on a fairer, more cultured and supportive society supported by sustainable development. At present Cálamo maintains two bookshop spaces: Librería Cálamo (Plaza San Francisco 4), specialised in literature, social sciences and travel books, and Cálamo Infantil (Plaza San Francisco 5), specialised in children's and young adult literature. Together they offer around 250 metres of display space and 22,000 different references. The Agenda Cálamo is the bookshop's organ of expression, published bimonthly and sent to the homes of anyone who wishes to receive it; it features recommended books, upcoming activities and short opinion articles, and occasionally supplements dedicated exclusively to highlighting the work of certain publishers. The Cálamo Newsletter, published fortnightly, is also highly personal and widely recognised. The Tarjeta de Cliente Impenitente (Impenitent Customer Card) offers numerous advantages to friends of the bookshop. Cálamo is a member of the Asociación de Librerías de Zaragoza, the CEGAL (Confederación Española de Gremios y Asociaciones de Librerías) and the AILF (Association Internationale des Libraires Francophones). It holds the Sello de Calidad de Librerías (Bookshop Quality Seal) — the only Aragonese company to do so. The bookshop also organises the annual Premio Cálamo, a literary award whose celebration is annual and whose dynamics are very simple. Its website features a regular blog section, 'La otra mirada de Cálamo', with literary reflections and its classic 'bonus track' of book recommendations.
