It was originally opened in a rural inn in Kirchweidach and quickly became a hub for subcultures including punk, wave, mod, goth, skinheads, and psychobillies from the surrounding region. The club hosted early concerts by bands such as Hans-A-Plast, Die Toten Hosen, Die Ärzte, and many others. In 1987, the building became dilapidated and was slated for demolition; the club relocated to an old villa in Altenmarkt an der Alz, where it continues to operate. Café LiBella is considered one of the oldest underground clubs in Germany and has been referenced in literature and television. It is also known for its annual dance cruises on the Chiemsee, a tradition that began in 1986. Today, the club hosts regular themed parties and events, catering to alternative music fans.
History
Café LiBella was opened in 1983 in a rural inn in Kirchweidach, Bavaria, under the name Café LiBella. It quickly attracted members of various subcultures—punk, wave, mod, goth, skinheads, and psychobillies—from the wider region. DJ Hell was an early house DJ, followed by others such as Mathias Scheffel, who later worked with Wolfgang Nöth. Shortly after opening, the club hosted concerts by bands including Hans-A-Plast, Peter Hein, Die Toten Hosen, Goldene Zitronen, and Die Mimmi's. In 1984, Die Ärzte performed there, and later acts included Liquid Liquid, Sunny Domestozs, Lurkers, Barbarella, Bugs, The Fair Sex, Mia, and Wir sind Helden. In 1986, the club organized its first dance cruise on the Chiemsee. By late September 1987, the building in Kirchweidach had become dilapidated and was slated for demolition. A farewell cruise on a Chiemsee steamer was held, with Karl Bruckmaier moderating a special broadcast for Zündfunk. Since then, the club has been located in an old villa in Altenmarkt an der Alz in the Traunstein district. The 2021 Marco Polo travel guide listed Café Libella as one of the oldest underground clubs in Germany, noting that young Munich residents traveled to LiBella because of Munich's curfew laws at the time. The club is considered legendary and one of the oldest underground scene venues in Germany. It continues to host regular events, including the annual Chiemsee Tanzschiff, Club Bizarre, House of Pain, Ü30 mit Stil, Schwarzlicht, Halloween All Areas, and Depeche Mode Club nights.
