Overview

The Cabane d'Orny is a mountain hut (refuge de montagne) in the Mont Blanc massif, located at 2,828 metres (2,811 m according to IGN) on the sunny side of the Aiguilles d'Arpette in the canton of Valais, Switzerland. It sits at the foot and on the left bank of the Orny Glacier, between two small glacial lakes, the lower of which is Lac d'Orny. In summer it can be reached from Champex-Lac by taking the Breya chairlift and then a trail (about 2 h 15 total), or entirely on foot via the Combe d'Orny (about 4 h 30). The hut is operated by the Swiss Alpine Club (Schweizer Alpen-Club) and serves as a base for numerous alpine excursions and climbs, including the Portalet, the Aiguilles Dorées, the Pointe des Ecandies, the Aiguille du Tour, the Aiguille d'Orny, the Pointe d'Orny, the Col des Plines, and the Cabane du Trient. It is a classic stop on the Tour du Mont Blanc and other alpine routes. The first stone hut with 10 places was built in 1876 under the direction of Édouard Dufour next to Lac d'Orny. In 1893 a second wooden hut with 35 places was erected. The current hut was built in 1975, 150 m higher, and enlarged in 1985. The 1893 hut was dismantled in 1979 and rebuilt in 1983 in the Dent de Vaulion massif in the Jura vaudois. The hut was supplemented by annexes in the 1990s. The Cabane d'Orny is a well-known landmark in the Valais Alps, offering meals and dormitory accommodation to hikers and climbers during the summer season. It is listed among the refuges of the Alps and is affiliated with the Swiss Alpine Club, which maintains a network of mountain huts across Switzerland.
