Schut Papier develops and produces premium paper solutions for a wide range of applications, from fine art and creative work to technical and industrial uses. The watercolour range includes the Terschelling and Multimedia lines, made from 100% wood-free cellulose or high-quality cotton fibres, all pH-neutral and acid-free for outstanding resistance to ageing. The circular paper line reflects the company's commitment to sustainability, transforming fibrous by-products from agriculture, food processing, the textile industry and roadside maintenance into distinctive, high-quality papers, with tailor-made development starting from just 3 tonnes. With over four centuries of craftsmanship, Schut Papier combines tradition, innovation and sustainability, positioning itself as a specialist in bespoke paper solutions for customers worldwide.

History

The history of Schut Papier dates back to the Dutch Golden Age, a period of rapid economic growth and societal development in the Netherlands. In the Veluwe area in the east of the country, countless small paper mills were built, taking advantage of the clean water and the power of fast-flowing streams. One of these mills, paper mill 'De Veentjes', was founded in the town of Heelsum as a water mill dedicated to paper production. In 1618, the mill was sold to the Schut family, and paper production continued under their ownership, giving rise to the name that the company still bears today: B.V. Papierfabriek voorheen Firma G. Schut & Zonen. Over the centuries, the mill evolved from a small water-powered operation into a modern paper mill. Located in Heelsum since its origin, the company has stood the test of time by combining traditional craftsmanship with a continuous drive for innovation. It became renowned for its high-quality uncoated papers for fine art, graphic and technical applications, and developed tailor-made solutions to meet the specific needs of customers worldwide. By the 21st century, Schut Papier had established itself as a recognised specialist in high-quality specialty papers, with a production range from 70 to 600 g/m² and more than 2,000 paper recipes, offering exceptional flexibility in fibre composition, formats, colours and finishes. Supported by a highly adaptable production process and advanced coating capabilities, the company continued to push the boundaries of paper creation. At some point, Schut Papier became part of the Exacompta Clairefontaine Group, a major European paper and stationery group. Within the group, it remains a key centre of expertise where heritage, innovation and uncompromising quality come together. The company continues to operate from Heelsum, producing art paper, circular paper, technical paper and coloured paper for customers around the world, and promoting sustainability through innovative paper grades made from fibrous residues.
