Overview
BusTech, originally known as Bustech, is an Australian bus manufacturer whose activities have included bus-body production, fully built integral buses and zero-emission vehicle development. The company was established on the Gold Coast in Queensland in 1995 by Joe and Tony Calabro, then proprietors of the Surfside Buslines operation. Its early business concentrated on low-entry route-bus bodies built on chassis supplied by manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz, Volvo and Hino, with additional work for school, charter and touring operators. The first vehicle from the original Ernest, Queensland facility was completed in 1998, and the company moved to a larger plant at Calabro Way, West Burleigh, in 2004. Bustech became particularly associated with the VST body, introduced in 2003. The low-floor model could be adapted to several chassis and door configurations and became a major product line, with more than 1,500 vehicles reportedly produced. In 2007 the company moved beyond body manufacture by completing its first integral bus, a mid-sized route vehicle. The 10.5-metre MDi entered production in 2008, followed by the larger XDi route bus, the SDi school bus and, in 2011, the CDi double-deck city bus. The CDi was notable as an Australian-built double-deck city bus developed for local operation after a long gap in domestic production of that type. Bustech completed its 1,000th bus in 2009. The company formed part of the Transit Australia Group from 2008 while remaining under Calabro family ownership. Transit Australia Group was dissolved in 2019 following the sale of its bus operations to AATS Group, now associated with the Kinetic Group; Bustech was not included in that transaction. Instead, Bustech’s relationship with Precision Buses, a bus business owned by Fusion Capital Holdings, developed into a formal merger process. A new holding structure, initially called Australian Bus Corporation, was established in 2019, while the operating businesses initially retained their own identities and facilities. The combined operation was relaunched as BusTech Group in December 2020. Electrification became a central part of the company’s later product strategy. Working with Swinburne University of Technology, the Automotive Cooperative Research Centre and the Malaysian Automotive Institute, Bustech unveiled the ZDi, described as Australia’s first locally engineered and manufactured electric bus, in 2015. The company also developed the XDi-E for evaluation in Malaysia and supplied an electric bus to Dubai for assessment in 2017. Later partnerships included arrangements with Ebusco to manufacture zero-emission buses in Australia and a collaboration with Proterra concerning battery technology for a 12.5-metre ZDi city bus. BusTech has operated facilities in Queensland and South Australia and has also been associated with production or assembly arrangements in Tasmania. In late 2023, production moved from Burleigh Heads to Rocklea in Brisbane. In 2021, the company announced plans for an electric-bus factory near Newcastle, New South Wales, intended to serve operators in that state. By 2022, BusTech was delivering buses in Queensland, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory. Newcastle Transport began using three ZDi buses in 2023 as part of New South Wales’ longer-term transition toward a zero-emission bus fleet. BusTech entered administration on 12 August 2024. In September 2024, GoZero Group agreed terms to acquire the two BusTech companies, and the transaction was completed on 1 July 2025. The business therefore remains an active Australian bus brand under new ownership, although its post-acquisition corporate structure, production scale and current model range require further verification.
History
BusTech was founded as Bustech in 1995 on Queensland’s Gold Coast by Joe and Tony Calabro, the owners of Surfside Buslines. The enterprise initially served the Australian bus-operator market by building bodies on externally supplied chassis, including Mercedes-Benz, Volvo and Hino platforms. Its first vehicle was completed at Ernest, Queensland, in 1998. Early customers included operators connected with the Calabro family as well as independent operators in Queensland and New South Wales. The company produced both low-floor and high-floor bodies, with early internal designations including ULF and UHF. The VST body, introduced in 2003, became the company’s most important early product. It was a low-floor urban bus body adaptable to different chassis, seating layouts and door arrangements. Bustech moved into a new factory at Calabro Way, West Burleigh, in October 2004. A school and charter body known as the Graduate was introduced in 2006 and later associated with the SBM and SBV designations, depending on the chassis family. These products broadened the business beyond scheduled urban routes into school, charter and touring applications. Bustech’s transition toward complete vehicle manufacture began with its first integral bus in 2007. The 10.5-metre MDi entered production in 2008, followed by the larger XDi and the SDi school bus. In July 2011 the company began producing the 12.5-metre CDi double-deck bus. The vehicle was developed for Australian urban service and was described as the first double-deck city bus built for Australian operation since 1973. Bustech reported completion of its 1,000th bus in November 2009. During this period the company formed part of the Transit Australia Group, which was created in 2008 as part of a restructuring of the Calabro family’s transport businesses. Electrification became a major development theme during the 2010s. Bustech worked with Swinburne University of Technology, the Automotive Cooperative Research Centre and the Malaysian Automotive Institute on the ZDi, a 12.5-metre, 41-seat low-floor electric integral bus. The first locally engineered and built Australian electric bus was unveiled in 2015. The ZDi used electric driveline and battery systems that varied by development phase; early production and evaluation vehicles were associated with ZF axles and Toshiba batteries. A related XDi-E prototype was delivered to Malaysia for evaluation in 2016. Transit Australia Group also reached an arrangement with Dubai South, and one ZDi vehicle was sent to Dubai for assessment in 2017. Corporate ownership changed substantially between 2017 and 2020. Bustech formed a joint venture with Precision Components, a Fusion Capital-owned business, and buses were produced under the Precision Buses name from 2017. Elphinstone Group in Tasmania also began assembling buses under agreement in that year. In 2019, Bustech was not included in the sale of Transit Australia Group’s bus operations to AATS Group. Instead, Bustech and Precision Buses announced a merger process under a new holding company called Australian Bus Corporation. The businesses initially retained their own brands and facilities, but the combined enterprise was rebranded as BusTech Group in December 2020. The new group pursued further zero-emission partnerships. In 2020 it announced an arrangement with Ebusco to manufacture Ebusco 2.2 and Ebusco 3.0 buses in Australia, and it also announced a collaboration with Proterra involving battery technology for a 12.5-metre electric ZDi. In February 2021 BusTech disclosed plans for a factory near Newcastle, New South Wales, aimed at supplying electric buses to state operators. By 2022, the company was delivering buses across Queensland, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory. In late 2023, production moved from Burleigh Heads to Rocklea in Brisbane. Three ZDi buses entered use with Newcastle Transport in 2023 as part of New South Wales’ transition toward a fully zero-emission bus fleet by 2047. The model was approved as a Panel 3 Australian vehicle for New South Wales procurement. BusTech entered administration on 12 August 2024. GoZero Group agreed terms to purchase both BusTech companies in September 2024, and the transaction was completed on 1 July 2025. The brand consequently continued under GoZero ownership. Further details about the post-acquisition organization, production volumes, executive team and current commercial range remain limited in the cited material.
