Overview

Reisedienst Meidenbauer is a German transport company headquartered in Königstein in the Oberpfalz (Upper Palatinate) region of Bavaria, on the edge of the Franconian Alb. It was founded in 1935 by Maria Meidenbauer as an omnibus operation and has remained a family-run business, with leadership passing to Werner Kugler in 1974 and to Manfred Kugler in 2009. The company operates both scheduled public transport (ÖPNV) and coach tourism, and is one of the concessionaires for the public transport network of the Verkehrsverbund Großraum Nürnberg (VGN), the transport association of the Nuremberg metropolitan region. The company's core public transport services connect its home base of Königstein with the towns of Hersbruck and Sulzbach-Rosenberg, and its route network is integrated into the VGN and the Verkehrsgemeinschaft Amberg-Sulzbach (VAS). It is particularly important for several smaller communities — Hartenstein, Hirschbach, Weigendorf and Holnstein — where it is the only operator serving the local stops. In addition to scheduled services, Reisedienst Meidenbauer runs an extensive programme of coach tours, including multi-day trips to destinations across Europe and single-day excursions, marketed under the slogan "Reisen mit Stil" (travel with style). The business has expanded through a series of regional public transport contracts. In 2006 it opened a branch in Hersbruck in Middle Franconia, about 35 km from Nuremberg. In 2010 it expanded its Königstein depot with a new workshop, office and training room. In 2013, following the expansion of the town bus service in Lauf an der Pegnitz, the company created Meidenbauer Stadtbus GmbH; in 2015, further route extensions in Alfeld, Hartmannshof and Pommelsbrunn led to the founding of Meidenbauer Regiobus GmbH. In 2017 both subsidiaries moved to a larger site in Altdorf bei Nürnberg. The company continued to win new route packages, including in the Hirschau, Hahnbach and Sulzbach area in 2019 and in the Burgthann, Ochenbruck, Feucht and Wendelstein area in 2025, alongside the acquisition of 24 new accessible low-floor buses. Reisedienst Meidenbauer remains a private, family-owned company. Its headquarters in Königstein houses the office, parking for several buses and maintenance facilities, while the Altdorf site serves as the base for its Stadtbus and Regiobus subsidiaries. The company is a well-established regional operator in the Nuremberg metropolitan region, combining local public transport duties with a substantial coach tourism business.

History

Reisedienst Meidenbauer was founded in 1935 by Maria Meidenbauer as an omnibus operation. The company is based in Königstein, on the edge of the Franconian Alb in the district of Amberg-Sulzbach in the Oberpfalz, in the triangle between Nuremberg, Amberg and Bayreuth. In 1974, Werner Kugler took over the management of the business, and in 2009 Manfred Kugler assumed leadership, continuing the family-run tradition. The company became a founding member of the Verkehrsverbund Großraum Nürnberg (VGN), the public transport association of the Nuremberg metropolitan region, in 1988, and joined the Verkehrsgemeinschaft Amberg-Sulzbach (VAS) in 1995. Its bus routes connect Königstein with Hersbruck and Sulzbach-Rosenberg, and the network is complemented by the VGN and VAS. The company is particularly significant for the communities of Hartenstein, Hirschbach, Weigendorf and Holnstein, where it is the only operator serving the respective stops. Until December 2017, it also operated the town bus services in Hersbruck and Lauf; in the re-tendering by the Landkreis Nürnberger Land, the competitor Schmetterling Reisen won the contract. In 2006, the company opened a branch in Hersbruck in Middle Franconia, in the Nürnberger Land district about 35 km from Nuremberg. In 2010, it expanded its Königstein depot with the construction of a new workshop, office and training room. In 2013, following the expansion of the town bus service in Lauf an der Pegnitz, the project Meidenbauer Stadtbus GmbH was launched. In 2015, the town bus service was extended with routes in Alfeld, Hartmannshof and Pommelsbrunn, leading to the founding of Meidenbauer Regiobus GmbH. In 2016, the service was further extended with routes in Altdorf, Burgthann and Röthenbach an der Pegnitz. In 2017, Meidenbauer Regiobus and Meidenbauer Stadtbus GmbH moved to a new, larger operating site in Altdorf bei Nürnberg. In 2019, the company expanded its scheduled services in the Hirschau, Hahnbach and Sulzbach area. In 2025, it further expanded its route network in the Burgthann, Ochenbruck, Feucht and Wendelstein area and acquired 24 new accessible low-floor buses. Alongside its public transport operations, Reisedienst Meidenbauer maintains a substantial coach tourism business, offering multi-day trips to destinations across Europe and day excursions, with bookings available by telephone. The company's long experience in travel, school and scheduled transport is presented as a guarantee of professionally organised and successful trips.
