History

Burson was formed by Garry Johnson and Ron Burgoine in 1971. The business originally distributed a small range of automotive accessories to service stations and automotive outlets in Melbourne, and grew quickly via expansion of its product range. The first store opened in Braybrook, VIC in 1978, with additional stores added predominantly by consolidation of independent operators. In 1986 Garry Johnson acquired Ron Burgoine's 50% share, after which the business expanded interstate, acquiring its first store in New South Wales at Albury. Burson opened its 15th store in 1987, its 25th store in 1996, and its 50th store in 2004. In 2005 it moved into a purpose-built head office and distribution centre in Preston, VIC. In 2006 it acquired 5 Coventry Group stores in NSW, and in 2008 acquired 11 Coventry Group stores in QLD. EzyParts 1.0 launched in 2009, and the first NT store opened in 2010. In 2011 Burson acquired 11 stores in South Australia from Coventry Group, and Garry Johnson sold the Burson business to Quadrant Private Equity and management. In 2012, 3 new stores opened (Yarrawonga NT, Lismore, Brookvale) and acquisitions included Townsville, Victor Harbour, Car Bitz Sunshine Coast, Mackay Discount Auto Spares and Castle Hill. In 2013, Precision Auto Spares Sydney was acquired by Burson, adding four stores, along with acquisitions of Mackay Chain St, Bundaberg and Peps Wetherill Park, and new stores at Redcliffe and Peakhurst. In 2014 Burson listed on the Australian Stock Exchange. In 2015 Burson created its national offering, with stores in every Australian state.
