Overview
Burg Hamburg Burg Inc. (株式会社バーグハンバーグバーグ, abbreviated BHB) is a Japanese web production company headquartered in Ohi, Shinagawa, Tokyo. Founded in June 2010 by Tetsuya Shimoda, Mutsuo Yamaguchi and Harajuku, the company grew out of the comedy web media Omo-Koro, which Shimoda had run since 2005. Its business spans web content production, media operation, and the planning and production of advertising, video, merchandise and events, as well as IP management. The company is known for a distinctive, humorous and often eccentric creative style that aims to make advertising content people actually enjoy and share on social media, rather than the advertising users tend to dislike. BHB's best-known asset is Omo-Koro, a web media launched in 2005 and dedicated to "loosely funny" content. The company also operates related properties such as Omo-Koro Bros (a recommendation-oriented sister media, originally called Nooton and renamed in 2019), Jimokoro (a local-focused owned media run with Aidem since 2015), the members-only community Hokahoka Onigiri Club, and the question site Coromo (launched in 2020 and scheduled to end service on April 30, 2025). Its YouTube channel Omo-Koro Channel, opened in May 2019, has become a major outlet, with a weekly update schedule that expanded over the years. A second channel, Fukkura Suzume Club, ran from July 2022 to October 2024. The company has produced a wide range of notable promotional content, including the "Indian Completely Ignored Curry" project for the Shibuya curry shop Karigari, the marriage-hunting promotional site for current president Kensuke Nagashima, the self-branded rice "Karada Meate," the niche stock-photo site "Sukima Nurse," the survey-based dating adventure game "LOVE♥Questionnaire," the Saga Prefecture × Baki collaboration site, the tissue-popcorn world championship co-hosted with UUUM, and the official website for YouTuber and entertainer Fuwa-chan. It also created the retro-style poster and billboard campaign for Gen Hoshino's sixth album Gen, which was nominated as a finalist for the 13th JAAA Young Award. Leadership changed in January 2019, when founding president Tetsuya Shimoda stepped down and Kensuke Nagashima became representative director. The company has around 30 employees and works with major clients and agencies including Google LLC, Dentsu Digital, Digital Advertising Consortium, Hakuhodo DY ONE, Yomiuri Advertising, Shueisha, Victor Entertainment, Amazon Japan, Rakuten Group, PAY Inc. and ZAIKO Inc. It does not maintain a sales department; work comes through direct requests and referrals from clients and agencies, with its past work and media properties serving as its de facto sales pitch. In 2023 it won the Internet Media AWARDS in the sponsored content category. In 2026 it announced its own publishing label, Omo-Koro Publishing.
History
Burg Hamburg Burg Inc. was established in June 2010 in Tokyo, growing out of the comedy web media Omo-Koro, which founder Tetsuya Shimoda had been running since 2005. Shimoda, together with Mutsuo Yamaguchi and Harajuku, incorporated the business to handle promotions for new services and products as well as media operations for portal sites. The company quickly became known for unique and edgy content and promotions, and its abbreviation "BHB" (or simply "Burg") became a recognizable name in Japanese web media. Omo-Koro, whose name derives from "omoshiro colosseum" (funny colosseum), remained the core media property. In 2015, the company partnered with Aidem to launch Jimokoro, a local-focused owned media. In 2016 it launched Omo-Koro Bros, a sister media originally called Nooton, which was renamed in 2019. The company also created a members-only community, Hokahoka Onigiri Club, and in 2020 launched the question site Coromo, which would later be scheduled to end service on April 30, 2025. A major leadership transition occurred in January 2019, when founding president Tetsuya Shimoda stepped down and Kensuke Nagashima, previously a writer and director, became representative director. Shimoda moved to Thailand until August 2020 and later returned to Japan to work as a part-time lecturer at Kyoto Seika University and a commentator on ABEMA Prime. Under Nagashima, the company continued to expand its video and digital content output. The Omo-Koro Channel YouTube channel, opened in May 2019, grew from two updates per week to five by 2024. A second channel, Fukkura Suzume Club, run by five Omo-Koro writers, operated from July 2022 to October 2024. Throughout its history, BHB has produced a wide array of notable promotional content. These include the "Indian Completely Ignored Curry" for the Shibuya curry shop Karigari, the marriage-hunting site for Nagashima, the self-branded rice "Karada Meate," the niche stock-photo site "Sukima Nurse," the survey-based dating adventure game "LOVE♥Questionnaire" co-developed with Macromill, the Saga Prefecture × Baki collaboration site, the tissue-popcorn world championship co-hosted with UUUM, and the official website for entertainer Fuwa-chan. The company also created the retro-style poster and billboard campaign for Gen Hoshino's album Gen, which was nominated as a finalist for the 13th JAAA Young Award. In 2023, it won the Internet Media AWARDS in the sponsored content category. BHB operates without a sales department; work comes through direct requests and referrals from clients and agencies, with its past work and media properties serving as its de facto sales pitch. The company has around 30 employees and works with major clients including Google LLC, Dentsu Digital, Digital Advertising Consortium, Hakuhodo DY ONE, Yomiuri Advertising, Shueisha, Victor Entertainment, Amazon Japan, Rakuten Group, PAY Inc. and ZAIKO Inc.
