Overview
Bunkeido (BUNKEIDO CO.,LTD.) is a Japanese publisher of educational materials and books. Its origins trace to 1900, when the first-generation Mizutani Rinnosuke started a book and textbook sales business in Gifu Prefecture under the name 'Bunkeido'. The company publishes school teaching materials and ICT solutions, children's books and general books, and teaching tools, and is listed on the Nagoya Stock Exchange Main Market.
History
In 1900 (Meiji 33), the first-generation Mizutani Rinnosuke founded a book and textbook sales business in Imao-cho, Gifu Prefecture (present-day Kaizu City), calling it 'Bunkeido'. In 1914, the second-generation Mizutani Kamakichi took over the business at age 18. In 1932, the company began producing and publishing 'Japanese and arithmetic practice books', 'writing models', and 'geography practice books (Japan and the world)', laying the foundation for its teaching-material publishing business. In 1933 it published 'Natsuyasumi no Tomo', 'Okeiko Dogu (Grade 1)', and 'Hiragana Cards'. In 1936 it changed the Japanese and arithmetic practice books to a loose-leaf format and published them under the name 'Monthly Print (today's tests)', also offering them by mail order. In 1942, his wife Mizutani Saku took over the family business, but as the war expanded, monthly sales of 'Monthly Print' fell to 200,000 copies. In 1944, due to paper shortages and staff being called up, publication of 'Monthly Print' was temporarily suspended. In 1946, the third-generation Mizutani Seikichi took over the family business, revived 'Monthly Print', and sold it as 'Study Print'. The company was incorporated on December 25, 1953 (Showa 28).
