Overview

The Bundesvereinigung Kulturelle Kinder- und Jugendbildung e. V. (BKJ) is the umbrella association for cultural education in Germany. It brings together more than 50 nationwide school and non-school institutions, professional associations and state umbrella organisations active in the fields of visual arts, literature, media, museums, music, play, dance, theatre and circus. The BKJ and its members work for diverse cultural education offerings in youth work, cultural institutions, schools and day-care centres, for cultural participation and inclusion, for voluntary engagement and international exchange, and for successful educational landscapes. Its goal is the further development and promotion of cultural education: socially sensitive, sustainable, accessible to as many people as possible, from the beginning and throughout life. The member organisations represent the different arts, cultural sectors and cultural-pedagogical fields. They run municipal, state and nationwide, sometimes international institutions, projects, further education programmes and competitions. Within the BKJ network they exchange ideas, pool their interests, optimise their offerings and develop their structures. The BKJ provides specialist knowledge and networking through publications and specialist events, creates opportunities for professional exchange in a strong and lively network, and contributes to qualification, quality assurance and transfer between actors. As a professional association, the BKJ represents the interests of its member associations and institutions vis-à-vis parliament and government and acts as a lobby for cultural education in the public sphere. Its aim is to secure and further develop cultural education with, by and for children and young people. Its tasks include quality assurance through specialist conferences, pilot projects and evaluation; policy advice and advocacy, including advice on the development of federal programmes for cultural education; participation in committees and institutions of national and international importance; building and securing structures that improve cultural work with, by and for children and young people; public relations through press work, publications and newsletters; preparation of materials, information and argumentation aids, and mediation of funding; information and advice through exchange among member associations and other interested groups; central office work for the German-French and German-Polish Youth Offices; coordination of the nationwide provider network for the Kompetenznachweis Kultur; and service and development for the professional support and implementation of cooperation between schools and non-school cultural institutions. The BKJ is the national central provider of the Voluntary Social Year in Culture (FSJ Kultur) and promotes international youth cultural projects and specialist exchanges. The association is a signatory of the Initiative Transparente Zivilgesellschaft (Transparent Civil Society Initiative). The BKJ is a union of 42 nationwide professional associations and institutions and 14 state associations (including the Landesvereinigung Kulturelle Bildung Bayern) for cultural education for children and young people. Represented are the fields of music, play, theatre, dance, circus, visual arts, literature, photography, film and video, children's museums, new media and cultural-pedagogical further education. Through its website, the BKJ publishes current news, tenders, event dates, training and workshops, and its magazine kubi – Magazin für Kulturelle Bildung, and it comments on educational policy developments such as the national education report.
