Overview

The Bundesverband Garten-, Landschafts- und Sportplatzbau e.V. (BGL), known in short as the GaLaBau Bundesverband, is a German employers' and trade association for the garden, landscape and sports ground construction sector. It represents the interests of the industry at federal level in Germany and in Europe. Its members are twelve regional state associations (Landesverbände), which together organise around 4,200 small and medium-sized specialist firms of German garden, landscape and sports ground construction as of March 2025. The association informs its members about developments in German and European legislation and at administrative level. It conducts collective bargaining negotiations and coordinates cross-cutting concerns of the state associations to secure the existence of member businesses and to advocate fair competitive conditions. It supports members in opening up new fields of work and runs working groups for information and experience exchange among landscape gardeners. In public relations, the associations engage in press work, publications and events. Every two years it organises the GaLaBau, the international leading trade fair for urban green and open spaces, held in Nuremberg; the 2024 edition was the 25th. Further tasks and services include promoting young talent, shaping the training of apprentices and the further education of skilled workers, contributing to relevant technical standards and other regulations, assistance with business organisation, rationalisation of tendering and billing, and business equipment, service offerings, support for the preparation and holding of federal and international garden shows, and awarding the Signum of the profession and monitoring its proper use. Member businesses work in areas such as commercial outdoor facilities, private house gardens, public green spaces and parks, cemetery facilities, green measures along roads, railways, waterways and airfields, company gardens and commercial green spaces, leisure facilities such as sports and playgrounds, golf courses and riding arenas, building greening such as roof, facade and interior greening and solar-green roofs, tree care, and water engineering measures. The association's headquarters were initially in the Bad Godesberg district of Bonn in the Andreas-Hermes-Haus. In 1975 the association acquired its own office building in Bad Godesberg (Plittersdorfer Straße 93) and inaugurated it on 20 April 1976 as the Haus der Landschaft. In 1989 the BGL moved to Bad Honnef into a new "Haus der Landschaft" (Alexander-von-Humboldt-Straße 4). Several other organisations of the garden, landscape and sports ground construction sector are also based in the Haus der Landschaft, including the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Qualitätsförderung im Garten-, Landschafts- und Sportplatzbau e.V. (ARGE), the Ausbildungsförderwerk Garten-, Landschafts- und Sportplatzbau e.V. (AuGaLa), the Einzugsstelle für die Winterbeschäftigungsumlage im Garten-, Landschafts- und Sportplatzbau (EWGaLa), the European Arboricultural Council e.V. (EAC), GaLaBau-Service GmbH (GBS), the Deutsche Rasengesellschaft, and the Qualitätsgemeinschaft Baumpflege und Baumsanierung e.V. (QBB).
