Bund Naturschutz in Bayern

Bund Naturschutz in Bayern (BN) is an environmental organization in Bavaria, Germany. Founded in 1913, it is described as the oldest and largest environmental association in Bavaria, with around 270,000 members and supporters. It engages in nature and environmental protection across Bavaria, including legal action against wolf culling permits, advocacy for forest conversion, and campaigns on energy transition and agriculture.

Bund Naturschutz in Bayern (BN) was founded in 1913. On 26 June 1913, at the suggestion of royal government councilor Rudolf Reubold, representatives of the State Committee for Nature Care, the Bavarian Botanical Society, the Bavarian Ornithological Society, and the Association for Natural History met in the session hall of the Bavarian Interior Ministry in Munich to found a nature conservation association. Professor Karl Freiherr von Tubeuf became its first chairman. In 1916, BN prevented the disfigurement of Königssee, its first major success. In 1922, members of the semi-state district committees for nature care were transferred into BN, creating the first district groups, and BN officially advised authorities on nature conservation issues. By the mid-1920s, BN was established throughout Bavaria, with large local groups in Munich, Swabia (Memmingen, Neu-Ulm), Franconia (Kitzingen, Ochsenfurt), and Lower Bavaria (Passau). In 1926, BN purchased its first protected property near Bad Windsheim to protect a occurrence of the wild tulip. In the 1930s, BN joined the National Socialist Reichsbund für Volkstum und Heimat. Today, BN is the oldest and largest environmental association in Bavaria, with around 270,000 members and supporters.
