Overview
The Bund der Egerländer Gmoin (officially Bund der Eghalanda Gmoin e.V. – Bund der Egerländer, abbreviated BdEG) is a German expellee association that was originally founded in 1907 to represent the interests of the German-speaking population of the Egerland, a historical region now divided between the Czech Republic and Bavaria. After the expulsion of Germans from the Egerland by the Czechoslovak Republic following the Second World War, the BdEG transformed into a Vertriebenenverband, an organization dedicated to preserving the heritage, customs, and community of displaced Egerländer and their descendants. The association is structured into regional state associations (Landesverbände), which in turn are composed of individual Egerländer Gmoin, the local community groups that form the base of the organization. Its registered office is at Fikentscherstr. 24, 95615 Marktredwitz, Germany. The BdEG is a member of the Bund der Vertriebenen (BdV), the umbrella organization of German expellee groups. Its current authorized board representative is Helmut Kindl. The BdEG's activities center on cultural preservation: maintaining the Egerländer dialect, traditional dress, music, dance, and history. It supports the Egerland-Museum through a Förderverein (support association) founded in 1994, publishes materials on Egerländer heritage, and organizes Bundestreffen (federal meetings) that bring together members from across Germany. The association also maintains youth groups (Egerland-Jugend) in several German states. Its website, egerlaender.de, serves as a hub for reports by state associations and Gmoin, and its 2024 relaunch was supported by the Stiftung Egerer Stadtwald.
History
The Bund der Eghalanda Gmoin (BdEG) was founded on 10 November 1907 in Tetschen (now Děčín, Czech Republic), following a preliminary meeting on 12 May 1907 at the Gmoi Teplitz-Schönau. The initiative came from the Gmoi Tetschen-Bodenbach, which in 1906 published a call in the journal "Unser Egerland" for the unification of all Egerländer associations in Austria. The purpose was to foster love of the homeland, renew old acquaintances, and cultivate local customs, traditions, and the mother tongue. By 1912 the association had over 700 members. In 1914 the first Gmoin abroad (New York, Trieste) were established and joined the BdEG. After the incorporation of German-speaking areas into the newly founded Czechoslovakia in 1918, only Gmoin resident there could be members. On 24 February 1924, Gmoin in the German Reich founded the Reichsbund der Eghalanda Gmoin. On 1 October 1938, after the annexation of the Sudetenland by Nazi Germany, all association activities were initially banned, but the BdEG was allowed to continue as a homeland association with its own traditional dress. In 1945/46, with the proclamation of the Second Czechoslovak Republic, the Egerländer were expropriated and expelled during the expulsion of Germans from Czechoslovakia. The first post-war Bundestreffen was held in 1949 in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. On 27 August 1950, the BdEG was re-founded at the second Bundestreffen in Schwäbisch Hall. Since then, it has functioned as a Vertriebenenverband (expellee association), preserving the cultural heritage of the Egerländer and supporting the Egerland-Museum. The Förderverein Egerland-Museum was founded in 1994 and registered in 1995. The BdEG is a member of the Bund der Vertriebenen (BdV). Its website was relaunched in 2024 with support from the Stiftung Egerer Stadtwald.
