Overview
Bumblebee – Friends of Nature (Czech: Čmelák – Společnost přátel přírody) is a North Bohemian environmental organization founded in 1994. Its mission is to restore specific damaged localities while linking this work to ecological education and public involvement. The organization's motto is "...for people, for nature." It specializes in transforming ecologically disturbed and neglected sites into places attractive to both people and nature. Its best-known restored sites include Nový prales (New Primeval Forest) and Mokřady Jablonné (Jablonné Wetlands). By 2014, it had planted over 500,000 trees and shrubs and cared for 62 hectares of environmentally significant sites. It has completed more than one hundred projects for people and nature and contributed to the revitalization of hundreds of hectares of landscape it did not own. Public involvement is central: it organizes excursions, field and thematic events for companies and schools, and volunteer activities for Czech and international volunteers. It has worked in the Liberec Region with municipalities and schools on tree-planting programs, planting about five hundred trees in spring 2013. In 2014, it received a grant in the Liberec Region for a project aimed at improving water retention. More than 15,000 people have participated in excursions to natural sites and volunteer field work. In ecological education, it annually organizes environmental education programs for more than 4,500 pupils and students, and over 23,000 pupils and students have been educated through its eco-programs. It received a UNESCO award for its cross-border project Green Professions with the German organization Naturschutzzentrum Neukirch, and the Ještědská mrkev award for its project Two Are More Than One for contributions to environmental education in the Liberec Region.
