Bulthaup's history begins in 1949, in the period following the Second World War, when Martin Bulthaup founded the "Martin Bulthaup Möbelfabrik". In 1951, Martin Bulthaup bought a sawmill in Bodenkirchen, not far from where the company's headquarters are based today, to pursue new, modern and efficient ways of working and designing furniture; the sawmill commenced operation on May 1, 1951, with a starting team of 7 men and women. At first Bulthaup produced kitchen sideboards made from superlative materials and exhibiting an exceptional level of craftsmanship, supplied to the vicinity on horsedrawn carriages; the company's good reputation enabled it to advance rapidly so that little by little it started to supply the whole of Germany. Even during the early stages of its history, bulthaup used market niches neglected by others to achieve spectacular sales successes far beyond Germany's borders, and the 1950s and 60s were characterized by continuous factory expansions and investment in new pro[ducts]. The company describes itself as an independent family business that has remained a company seeing itself as a place of constant questioning and insatiable curiosity.
