Bulpitt & Sons

Bulpitt & Sons was a British electrical-goods manufacturer based in Birmingham, England. The business began as a brass founder during the late nineteenth century and developed into a maker of domestic electrical appliances, particularly kettles and irons. Its industrial base was located at St George’s Works on Icknield Street, Camden Street and Pope Street, on the edge of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. The works and offices dated from around 1890 and became closely associated with the company’s manufacturing identity. During the early twentieth century, Bulpitt & Sons registered the Swan Brand name. Swan subsequently became the company’s principal consumer-facing identity, linking the manufacturer with household electrical products. In the 1920s, the company expanded into domestic appliances, including electric kettles and irons, as household electrification created new demand for convenient cooking and heating equipment. Its most notable technical contribution was the development of a submersible electric heating element. Unlike earlier kettle arrangements in which the heating element was separated from the water, the immersed element enabled a more direct method of heating and became an important feature of Swan electric kettles. An early Swan copper kettle incorporating such an element is held by the Science Museum Group. Bulpitt & Sons remained connected to the Swan name as the domestic-appliance business evolved. In the 1970s, the company became a subsidiary of BSR (Housewares) Ltd. BSR had originated as Birmingham Sound Reproducers and was best known for turntables and record-playing equipment, but its housewares interests gave Bulpitt & Sons a place within a broader consumer-appliance structure. The business later changed hands again when the French appliance company Moulinex acquired the Swan brand in 1988. Bulpitt & Sons (Swan Brand) Ltd was dissolved on 21 May 1989, ending the original company’s corporate existence nearly a century after the establishment of its Birmingham works. The Swan name continued after the dissolution of the original manufacturer. Littlewoods acquired the brand in 2000, followed by Swan Products Ltd in 2017. Since 2023, the brand has been owned by Sutton Venture Group and operated through that group’s RKW trading division. These later ownership changes concern the continuing Swan brand rather than the now-defunct Bulpitt & Sons company itself. Manufacturing activity at the Birmingham site continued in some form until 2006. The premises were later stripped internally by property developers in preparation for redevelopment. Renamed The Kettleworks, the former industrial complex was converted into residential apartments and commercial units, with the redevelopment completed in 2019. Bulpitt & Sons is therefore significant both as an example of Birmingham’s electrical-manufacturing heritage and for the Swan brand’s contribution to the development and popularization of domestic electric kettles.

During the 1970s, Bulpitt & Sons became a subsidiary of BSR (Housewares) Ltd. The parent organization had originated as Birmingham Sound Reproducers, a manufacturer associated with turntables for playing records, but it also operated in housewares. Bulpitt & Sons consequently became part of a wider consumer-products structure while retaining its association with Swan appliances. Moulinex, a French appliance manufacturer, acquired the Swan brand in 1988. The original corporate business did not continue for long afterward: Bulpitt & Sons (Swan Brand) Ltd was dissolved on 21 May 1989. The dissolution marked the end of the original company as a legal entity, although Swan survived as a brand. Littlewoods acquired Swan in 2000, and Swan Products Ltd acquired it in 2017. From 2023, Swan has been owned by Sutton Venture Group and operated through its RKW trading division. Manufacturing at the Birmingham site continued in some form until 2006. The premises were subsequently prepared for redevelopment, including interior stripping in 2009. The complex was renamed The Kettleworks and converted into apartments and commercial units. That project was completed in 2019, giving the former industrial site a new use while preserving its connection with Birmingham’s manufacturing history. Bulpitt & Sons is now defunct, but its historical importance remains visible through the surviving Swan brand, museum-held appliance examples and the continued recognition of its Birmingham works.
