Overview

BSC Music is a German independent record label and music publishing house based in Munich. It was founded in November 1988 by the musician and music businessman Christoph Bühring-Uhle and the musician and journalist Christian Stolberg. Bühring-Uhle had previously worked as marketing director for the retail chain WOM (World of Music), where he had launched the WOM Journal music newspaper and the WOM Musikverlag publishing arm. The two founders wanted to build a truly independent music company free of corporate compromises, so they founded BSC, took over the WOM music publishing business and initially released WOM label albums through various labels. The heart of the BSC repertoire became modern instrumental music, for which they created the Prudence label. In the early 1990s BSC signed prominent British acts such as Rupert Hine and The Fixx, and launched the R'n'D label for that purpose. The biggest early success came from the sub-label Focus, which specialised in German-language pop and rock; the band Cusco, led by Michael Holm and Kristian Schultze, sold up to 1.5 million copies of its albums and largely financed the build-up of the label programme. In 1993 and 1994 the compilations Brennzeichen D and And the Beat Goes On were released. After a strong expansion phase with up to 13 bands and its own festival, the label incurred losses and scaled back again. Today BSC Music's musical focus is on so-called "Cosmopolitan Music", a broad field encompassing New Age, world music, easy listening, smooth jazz, soundtracks, folk, ambient, electronic music and chill-out. The Prudence label in particular has earned an international reputation for its instrumental music selection. Other labels include MundArt for Bavarian bands and artists, R'n'D for rock from the UK and Germany, and Embab for jazz. Albums by the German punk band Lustfinger are sold through Rotz+Wasser. CD distribution is handled by Bertus Distribution, while digital distribution is handled by Zebralution. The company is headquartered in Munich and has been an independent, privately held business since its founding. Its website presents a family of labels and a roster of artists, with regular new releases, concert dates and news updates. BSC Music remains active as a niche independent label and publisher, releasing music by artists such as Salvator, Dietz' Mundartdelta, Barbara Lexa, Ginkgo Garden, Shajan, Peter Mergener, LustfingeR and Enigmatic Obsession.

History

BSC Music was founded in November 1988 by the musician and music businessman Christoph Bühring-Uhle and the musician and journalist Christian Stolberg in Munich. Bühring-Uhle had previously served as marketing director of the retail chain WOM (World of Music), where he had launched the WOM Journal music newspaper and the WOM Musikverlag publishing house. The two founders wanted to realise their vision of a truly independent music company without compromises with corporate interests of any kind, so they decided to found their own company. Their new firm BSC took over the WOM music publishing business and initially released the albums of the WOM label on various labels. The heart of the BSC repertoire became modern instrumental music, for which they created the Prudence label. Both founders had already been active in the music business for over ten years in various positions, so they knew from the start that BSC Music should operate away from the well-trodden paths of the multinational corporations in the mainstream pop market. They also wanted to release only music to which they — and later the whole BSC Music team — could develop a genuine emotional connection. In the early 1990s BSC signed contracts with prominent British acts such as Rupert Hine and The Fixx for the first time, and the R'n'D label was created for this purpose. The biggest success from the early period was the sub-label Focus, which specialised in German-language pop and rock. The band Cusco, led by Michael Holm and Kristian Schultze, sold up to 1.5 million copies of its albums and thus financed a large part of the build-up of the label programme. In 1993 and 1994 the two compilations Brennzeichen D and And the Beat Goes On were released. After a strong expansion phase with up to 13 bands and its own festival, the label incurred losses and scaled back again. The company was initially based in Icking, and from 1999 until early 2017 the label was located in Münsing on Lake Starnberg. Today the musical focus of BSC Music lies in the area of so-called "Cosmopolitan Music", which includes genres such as New Age, world music, easy listening, smooth jazz, soundtracks, folk, ambient, electronic music and chill-out. The Prudence label in particular has been able to make an international name for itself with its high-quality instrumental music selection. Other labels include MundArt, on which albums by Bavarian bands and artists are released, R'n'D (rock from the UK and Germany) and Embab (jazz). Albums by the German punk band Lustfinger are sold through Rotz+Wasser. CD distribution is handled by Bertus Distribution, while digital distribution is handled by Zebralution. The company remains an independent, privately held music label and publisher headquartered in Munich.
