Overview

Brunnihütte is a mountain hut of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) located at 1,860 metres above sea level by the Härzlisee in the Brunni area of the municipality of Engelberg, in the canton of Obwalden, Switzerland. It is a serviced alpine shelter used by hikers, climbers and ski-tourers, and it is notable for being probably the only SAC hut with its own chairlift station. The hut was built in 1932 with 35 places, at a time when it was still assumed to lie at an altitude of 1,900 metres; a wooden sign on the present hut still shows that older elevation. Since 2000 the hut has also stood beside a lake, the Härzlisee, which serves as a reservoir for snowmaking on the ski slopes in the Brunni area. The Brunnihütte is a starting point for several via ferrata routes on the Rigidalstock, including the Rigidalstockwand (K3–4), the Rigidalstockgrat (K3), the beginner-friendly Brunnistöckli (K2) and the Zittergrat (K4), the most difficult of the routes. As a SAC hut, it forms part of the club's network of mountain shelters and is listed among the SAC huts. The hut's official website is brunnihuette.ch; the domain has at times been offered through a domain auction, but the hut itself remains an active alpine facility operated within the SAC system.
