Overview
The Brown Bear Foundation (Fundación Oso Pardo, FOP) is a Spanish non-governmental organisation constituted in 1992 with the aim of contributing to the study and conservation of the brown bear in the Cantabrian Mountains, as well as its habitat and its natural and cultural environment. It is a conservationist NGO whose work focuses on the last important surviving native population of bears in Spain, although it also collaborates in conservation initiatives for other threatened bear populations, such as the reintroduction of the bear in the Pyrenees between the French and Spanish border. Its scope of work has gradually expanded to cover almost the entire Cantabrian Mountains. Its activities extend to fields such as the conservation and restoration of habitats of high interest for the species, monitoring of the bear population, support for research, the pursuit of poaching, and environmental education, all supported by the activity of numerous patrols of wardens-monitors created and trained by the FOP. All its actions are regulated by the board of trustees (patronato) of the NGO, which is the body of representation and governance, made up of a group of professionals and researchers from different fields. The FOP relies on the economic and logistical sponsorship of private companies such as Caja Cantabria, Land Rover, Chiruca and Unión Fenosa, committed to the conservation of the brown bear and its environment. It also has the collaboration and sponsorship of the European Union through the LEADER, LIFE/Nature and PRODER programmes; of the autonomous administrations of Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla y León and Galicia; of the Ministry of the Environment; and of other foundations such as the Fundació Territori i Paisatge of Caixa Catalunya and the Fundación Biodiversidad of the Ministry of the Environment. It received the Premio Ondas Mediterráneas de Defensa del Patrimonio Natural recognition in 2008. The foundation operates a network of themed centres called Las Casas del Oso, which address the life and conservation problems of the brown bear as well as the relationships of this emblematic species with the humans with whom it shares territory.
