Overview
Browar Nr 1 w Lublinie (Brewery No. 1 in Lublin) is a historic industrial brewery in Lublin, Poland, and the main production facility of Perła – Browary Lubelskie S.A., one of the largest regional beer producers in the country. The plant traces its origins to 1912, when Jewish industrialist Hersz Jojna Zylber founded it as Browar Parowy Jeleń (Steam Brewery 'Deer'). It specialised in ordinary and kosher beer for the market of the Kingdom of Congress Poland and for export. After being closed during World War I, it resumed operations after 1918 and competed in the interwar period with the Vetter brewery. During World War II the Zylber family was dispossessed by the Germans and murdered in the Bełżec extermination camp; the founder's surviving son, Stefan Zylber-Jankowski, recovered the plant after 1945 and restarted brewing, only to lose it to nationalisation in 1948. The enterprise was merged with the Vetter brewery as Lubelskie Zakłady Piwowarsko-Słodownicze and from then on operated as Browar Nr 1 Jeleń w Lublinie. Under state ownership the brewery was expanded with equipment from closed plants, producing 40,000 hl of beer in 1951 and 150,000 hl by 1990, when its sole beer was Perła Chmielowa. Since 2001 it has been the only active industrial brewing plant in Lublin. Today it belongs to Perła – Browary Lubelskie S.A., whose portfolio includes Perła Chmielowa, Perła Export, Perła Niepasteryzowana, Perła Mocna, Perła Koźlak, Perła Porter Bałtycki and alcohol-free variants, alongside brands such as Goolman, Zwierzyniec Pils and Fox. The company also operates a historic brewery in Zwierzyniec and a modern production site at ul. Kunickiego 106 in Lublin, with its registered office in the historic brewery building at ul. Bernardyńska 15.
History
Browar Nr 1 w Lublinie was founded in 1912 by Jewish industrialist Hersz Jojna Zylber under the name Browar Parowy Jeleń (Steam Brewery 'Deer'). The plant specialised in producing ordinary beer and kosher beer for the market of the Kingdom of Congress Poland and for foreign markets. During World War I the company was closed. After 1918 it resumed operations. In the interwar period the plant competed with the ZP K.R. Vetter brewery. During World War II the Zylber family was deprived of its property by the Germans and forced to live in the ghetto; later they perished in the Bełżec extermination camp. After 1945 the only surviving son of the brewery's owner, Stefan Zylber-Jankowski, managed to recover the plant and resumed beer production. However, he lost it in 1948 as a result of nationalisation. The enterprise was nationalised and merged with the Vetter brewery as Lubelskie Zakłady Piwowarsko-Słodownicze w Lublinie (Lublin Brewing and Malting Works). From then on the plant was called Browar Nr 1 Jeleń w Lublinie. Lubelskie Zakłady Piwowarsko-Słodownicze expanded the brewery using equipment from closed plants and in 1951 produced 40,000 hl of beer. In the 1950s and 1970s further development took place: a new brewhouse was installed, the fermentation and maturation cellars were expanded, and a bottling hall was built. In 1990 the brewery shipped 150,000 hl of beer. It was the only beer brewed at the plant: Perła Chmielowa with an extract content of 12.5% and 4.5% alcohol. Since 2001 Browar Nr 1 w Lublinie has been the only active industrial brewing plant in Lublin. Today it operates as part of Perła – Browary Lubelskie S.A., one of the largest regional beer producers in Poland and the undisputed leader in the Lublin region. The company includes a modern production plant at ul. Kunickiego 106, the management board office in the historic brewery building at ul. Bernardyńska 15 in Lublin, and a historic brewery in Zwierzyniec. The brewery has been brewing continuously since 1846 according to the company's official website, and uses local hop varieties valued throughout Europe.
