Overview

Brouwerij Mommeriete is a small Dutch craft brewery based in Gramsbergen, in the Salland Vechtdal region of the province of Overijssel. It was founded in 2004 by Gert and Carina Kelder, who had been homebrewing since the 1980s under the inspiration of Belgian beers. The brewery produces both top-fermented beers in the Belgian style and bottom-fermented beers in the German style, and its beers are neither filtered nor pasteurised. The name "Mommeriete" refers to a nearby marshland where a battle was fought in 1227. The brewery was officially opened on 27 August 2004 at the De Groote Scheere estate in Holthone, together with the De Ganzenhoeve complex. In 2009 it moved to a historic former bargemen's café along the canal in Gramsbergen, a building dating from 1857, which provided space for a tasting room and further expansion. The brewery has won numerous awards for its beers, including gold medals at the PINT Bokbierfestival and the International Beer Cup in Yokohama, and more recently at the Dutch Beer Challenge. Mommeriete's range includes seasonal and year-round beers such as Meibock, Rookbock, Blond, Scheerse Triple, Vrouwe van Gramsbergen, Heer van Gramsbergen and Winterbier. In addition to beer, the company produces an eau de vie and whisky, as well as cheese, pâté and sausage made with its own beer as an ingredient. The brewery also operates a café and tasting room at its canal-side location, offering tours, tastings, coffee, lunch and a beer garden, and sells its beers and beer packages directly to consumers.

History

Brouwerij Mommeriete was founded in 2004 by Gert and Carina Kelder, who had been homebrewing since the 1980s, inspired by Belgian beers. In 2003 they brewed a beer for the event 'Gramsbergen Lichtstad', which led to the establishment of their brewery in 2004 on the De Groote Scheere estate in Holthone. The brewery was officially opened on 27 August 2004, at the same time as the opening of the De Ganzenhoeve complex. In 2009 the brewery moved to a historic former bargemen's or house café along the canal in Gramsbergen. The building, dating from 1857, provided space for a tasting room and further expansion of activities. In 2010 the bottling equipment was temporarily rented to Brouwerij De Leckere in De Meern. After the rental contract ended, the bottling equipment was moved to a location in Veenhuizen where a new brewery, Brouwerij Maallust, was founded. In March 2017 the company was visited by Patrick Stoof and Kasper van Kooten for the television programme Leven in de Brouwerij. Over the years, Brouwerij Mommeriete has received various awards for its beers. In 2009 the brewery won gold in the 'Speciaal Bock' category at the PINT Bokbierfestival. In 2013 Mommeriete's Meibock took third place with the jury and second place with the public at the Bierfestival Groningen. During the International Beer Cup in Yokohama in 2015, the brewery received a gold medal for Heer van Gramsbergen and silver for Vrouwe van Gramsbergen. In 2016 the Rookbock was awarded gold in the 'Speciaal Bock' category at the PINT Bokbierfestival. Recent successes include gold for Het Varel in the 'IPA' category at the Dutch Beer Challenge in 2023 and gold for Heer van Gramsbergen in the 'Imperial Stout' category in 2024, where silver was also won for Hendrik 1 in the 'Blond-/Meibock' category.
