Overview

Brooks Brothers is an American heritage clothing brand founded in Manhattan in 1818 by Henry Sands Brooks. It is widely described as the oldest apparel brand in continuous operation in the United States. The business began as H. & D. H. Brooks & Co. and was renamed Brooks Brothers in 1850 after ownership passed to Brooks's four sons. Its Golden Fleece emblem, adopted in 1850, became a central visual symbol of the brand. The company helped shape the American ready-to-wear market. Rather than concentrating exclusively on bespoke clothing, it developed commercially available suits and other garments for customers who wanted established quality and recognizable style without commissioning individual tailoring. Its design history includes the American sack suit, the button-down Oxford shirt, foulard ties, polo coats, Shetland sweaters, Harris Tweed, madras, argyle socks, lightweight summer suits, wash-and-wear shirts and non-iron cotton dress shirts. The button-down collar, introduced to the American market in the late nineteenth century after John E. Brooks observed polo players securing their collars, became one of the brand's most enduring signatures. Brooks Brothers has traditionally positioned itself around conservative, polished American dress rather than seasonal fashion. Its core business has included men's suits, sport coats, dress shirts, knitwear, trousers, ties, accessories and shoes, later expanding into womenswear, childrenswear, casual clothing, home products, fragrances and eyewear through licensed arrangements. Its clothing has been associated with presidents, public officials, business leaders, entertainers and academic or professional institutions. The brand's political and cultural visibility has been reinforced by long-running associations with American formalwear and Ivy style, although claims about dressing every president should be treated cautiously because documented usage varies by individual and occasion. The company changed ownership several times during the twentieth century. The Brooks family ceased to control it after its 1946 sale to Julius Garfinckel & Co. It subsequently became part of Allied Stores and was acquired by Marks & Spencer in 1988. In 2001, Marks & Spencer sold the brand to Retail Brand Alliance, later known as The Brooks Brothers Group, associated with Claudio Del Vecchio. During this period the company expanded internationally, developed premium and designer-oriented collections, launched an official website and introduced home furnishings. Brooks Brothers entered the 2020s under pressure from the long-term casualization of office clothing, online competition, store costs and the COVID-19 retail disruption. After seeking a buyer and reporting plans to close domestic factories, it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in July 2020. Authentic Brands Group and Simon Property Group acquired the business in September 2020 and continued the brand with a smaller retail footprint. Michael Bastian became creative director in December 2020. In 2023, the more accessible B by Brooks Brothers line was introduced through Macy's. Catalyst Brands, a retail platform that also includes several other apparel and department-store brands, owned Brooks Brothers by 2025. The brand continues to sell through stores, e-commerce, wholesale and licensing relationships, while maintaining a heritage-led identity.

History

Henry Sands Brooks opened H. & D. H. Brooks & Co. on April 7, 1818, at Catherine and Cherry Streets in Manhattan. His stated commercial principle emphasized high-quality merchandise, fair profit and customers who valued quality. In 1833, his sons Elisha, Daniel, Edward and John inherited the business; in 1850 they adopted the name Brooks Brothers and introduced the Golden Fleece as a trademark. During the nineteenth century the company became an important promoter of ready-to-wear American clothing. It supplied garments to prominent customers, including Abraham Lincoln, and produced a coat for Lincoln's second inauguration. The company also supplied uniforms during the Civil War, although historical accounts describe serious quality problems with some military contracts and connect the episode with the popularization of the term “shoddy.” Brooks Brothers introduced or popularized several forms that later became associated with American menswear, including the sack suit, button-down collar, foulard tie and polo coat. The company opened its major Madison Avenue store in 1915. Through the twentieth century it built a reputation for restrained, durable and institutionally acceptable clothing. Its assortment expanded from traditional men's clothing into womenswear, childrenswear, accessories and licensed categories. The Brooks Costume Company also supplied costumes to the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus for much of the century. The final Brooks family leader, Winthrop Holley Brooks, remained in charge until the 1946 sale to Julius Garfinckel & Co. The company later operated within Garfinckel, Brooks Brothers, Miller & Rhoads and was acquired by Allied Stores in 1981. Marks & Spencer purchased it in 1988. Under Marks & Spencer, the brand retained its American identity while developing broader retail and international operations. Its official website launched in 1998. Retail Brand Alliance acquired Brooks Brothers from Marks & Spencer in 2001. Under Claudio Del Vecchio, the company expanded overseas and tested new formats. The Black Fleece collection, launched in 2007 with Thom Browne as its first guest designer, brought a more fashion-oriented interpretation to the label; the collection was discontinued in 2015. The company also renovated its Madison Avenue flagship, introduced a luxury home collection in 2010 and continued licensing its name for products such as eyewear and fragrance. By the late 2010s, the business faced declining demand for formal office clothing, intensified digital competition and a costly store base. The company sought a buyer in 2020, considered factory closures and filed for Chapter 11 on July 8 of that year. The filing contemplated closing 51 North American locations. Authentic Brands Group and Simon Property Group completed their acquisition in September 2020, with Ken Ohashi appointed president and chief executive. Michael Bastian became creative director in December 2020. The post-bankruptcy business operated with fewer stores and a more diversified channel strategy. B by Brooks Brothers, a lower-priced line, launched through Macy's in 2023. In 2024, the Canadian operator entered creditor-protection proceedings and the Canadian store network was slated for closure. By 2025, Brooks Brothers was part of Catalyst Brands. The opening of a new Lower Manhattan flagship at 195 Broadway reconnected the brand with its founding neighborhood and used historical objects and reproductions to reinforce its heritage positioning.

    Civil War uniform quality controversy

Brooks Brothers supplied uniforms to New York State troops during the Civil War. Historical accounts describe some garments as made with inferior recycled material that deteriorated in wet conditions, provoking ridicule and contributing to the association of the word “shoddy” with poor-quality goods.
