Overview

Brookfield is the principal corporate brand of Brookfield Corporation, a Canadian public company headquartered in Toronto. The group invests in, manages and operates real assets and businesses that support essential economic activity. Its activities span alternative asset management, infrastructure, renewable power and transition assets, real estate, private equity, credit, insurance and retirement solutions. Brookfield serves institutional investors, pension plans, sovereign wealth funds, insurance companies, endowments, foundations, financial advisers and private-wealth clients. The modern corporation was created in 1997 through the merger of Edper Investments and Brascan Corporation. It initially operated as EdperBrascan, changed its name to Brascan in 2000, and adopted the Brookfield Asset Management name in 2005. In December 2022, the listed parent was renamed Brookfield Corporation and separated its fee-generating asset-management business into a separately listed company, Brookfield Asset Management Ltd., which trades under BAM. Brookfield Corporation retained a substantial ownership interest in the asset manager and continued to hold interests in wealth solutions and operating businesses. Brookfield’s heritage is older than the 1997 corporate formation. Its Brascan predecessor traces its roots to Canadian-led electricity and tramway ventures in Brazil. The São Paulo Tramway, Light and Power Company was established in 1899, followed by the Rio de Janeiro Tramway, Light and Power Company in 1904. In 1912, the Brazilian Traction, Light and Power Company was incorporated in Toronto to consolidate and finance those activities. The business later diversified into hydroelectricity, utilities, real estate, timber, mining and other operating sectors. The name Brascan combined “Brasil” and “Canada.” Today, Brookfield Corporation describes itself as operating through three connected areas: Asset Management, Wealth Solutions and Operating Businesses. Its asset-management platform raises and manages private funds across infrastructure, energy and transition, real estate, private equity and credit. Brookfield Wealth Solutions provides retirement services, annuities, reinsurance, property and casualty insurance and related capital solutions. The operating portfolio includes listed and privately held businesses associated with renewable power, infrastructure, real estate and business services. Brookfield’s distinctive positioning is that of a long-term owner-operator rather than a purely financial sponsor. It seeks assets with durable, often contracted or inflation-linked cash flows, then applies operational expertise, disciplined financing and long-duration capital. The group emphasizes downside protection, capital preservation, business improvement and reinvestment of cash flows. Its ecosystem combines investment professionals with operating companies, providing information, sourcing relationships and execution capabilities across sectors. The group has expanded internationally through acquisitions, partnerships, fund formation and the development of operating platforms. Significant milestones include the appointment of Bruce Flatt as CEO in 2002, the 2005 rebranding from Brascan to Brookfield Asset Management, the 2007 acquisition of Multiplex, the 2015 acquisition of control of Brookfield Global Integrated Solutions, the 2019 acquisition of a majority interest in Oaktree Capital Management, and the 2022 corporate reorganization. In 2026, Brookfield announced completion of the acquisition of the remaining Oaktree interests, bringing the credit platform more fully into Brookfield’s structure while retaining Oaktree’s leadership and investment identity. Brookfield’s current public identity is therefore broader than that of a conventional asset manager. Brookfield Corporation is an owner of investment-management franchises, insurance and wealth businesses, and operating companies, while Brookfield Asset Management is the principal fee-generating manager. Across the group, the brand is associated with large-scale alternative investments, infrastructure development, renewable energy, real estate ownership and private-market solutions.

History

Brookfield Corporation combines a modern alternative-investment business with a heritage extending more than a century into utilities, transportation, energy and real estate. The oldest predecessor associated with the group was the São Paulo Tramway, Light and Power Company, established in 1899 by William Mackenzie and Frederick Stark Pearson to develop and operate urban transport and electric infrastructure in Brazil. A related Rio de Janeiro tramway and power company followed in 1904. In 1912, the Brazilian Traction, Light and Power Company was incorporated in Toronto as a public holding company. It consolidated Canadian-backed interests in Brazilian electricity and tramway infrastructure and later became an important vehicle for hydroelectric and utility development. The company expanded its Canadian activities as well, including through Great Lakes Power Company, incorporated in 1916. Its corporate identity changed several times: Brazilian Traction became Brazilian Light and Power in 1966 and Brascan Limited in 1969. “Brascan” was formed from the words Brazil and Canada. During the 1970s, Brascan began reducing its Brazilian exposure and diversifying into real estate, timber, mining and other industries. By 1979, its remaining Brazilian assets had been transferred to Brazilian ownership, while the Canadian company continued as a diversified holding and operating business. The group’s history during this period included investments in property, natural resources, building services and other operating sectors rather than a narrow focus on financial products. Edper Investments, another predecessor, was founded in 1959 by brothers Peter and Edward Bronfman. Through a complex corporate structure and a series of investments, Edper became closely associated with Brascan. In the 1990s, the organization pursued simplification and consolidation. In April 1997, Edper announced its intention to merge with Brascan, in which it held a significant stake. Shareholders approved the transaction in July, and EdperBrascan Corporation was formed as an Ontario corporation on August 1, 1997. The company changed its name to Brascan in 2000. Bruce Flatt, who had joined the organization in 1990, became chief executive officer in 2002. Under his leadership, the company increasingly emphasized real assets, direct ownership, operating expertise and long-term capital allocation. In September 2005, Brascan was renamed Brookfield Asset Management. The new name helped establish a unified global identity around real estate, infrastructure, renewable power, private equity and other alternative investments. Brookfield expanded through major operating and investment transactions. In 2007, it acquired Multiplex, an Australian construction and contracting business. In 2012, Brookfield’s building-services operations and Johnson Controls Global WorkPlace Solutions were combined into Brookfield Johnson Controls. In 2015, Brookfield acquired control of that business and renamed it Brookfield Global Integrated Solutions, broadening its position in facilities management. During the 2010s, Brookfield also made substantial investments in Brazilian energy, infrastructure and real estate. A major strategic step came in 2019, when Brookfield acquired a majority interest in Oaktree Capital Management. Oaktree added deep capabilities in credit, distressed debt and opportunistic investing, complementing Brookfield’s established real-asset platforms. The two organizations operated as partners for several years before Brookfield announced the completion of its acquisition of the remaining Oaktree interests in August 2026. Oaktree’s investment identity and senior leadership were retained within the enlarged credit platform. In 2022, Brookfield reorganized its public-company structure. The former Brookfield Asset Management parent was renamed Brookfield Corporation, with ticker BN, and its fee-generating asset-management business was separated into Brookfield Asset Management Ltd., with ticker BAM. Brookfield Corporation retained ownership interests in the manager, wealth solutions and a portfolio of operating businesses. This structure distinguished the permanent-capital and principal-investment role of Brookfield Corporation from the fee-generating role of Brookfield Asset Management. The contemporary Brookfield group operates through three connected areas. Asset Management raises and manages private funds in infrastructure, energy transition, real estate, private equity and credit. Wealth Solutions provides annuities, retirement services, insurance, reinsurance and related capital solutions. Operating Businesses include interests associated with renewable power, infrastructure, real estate and business services. The group’s stated investment model is based on acquiring high-quality assets, improving operations, financing conservatively and building stable, growing and often inflation-linked cash flows. Brookfield’s historical evolution is therefore a progression from Canadian-backed Brazilian utilities to a diversified industrial holding company, then to a global owner-operator and alternative-investment platform. Its brand now represents both the investment-management capabilities of Brookfield Asset Management and the permanent capital, wealth solutions and operating assets held through Brookfield Corporation.
