Overview

The Brixner Hütte is a mountain hut (Schutzhütte) owned and operated by the Brixen section of the Alpenverein Südtirol (AVS), located in the Pfunderer Berge, part of the Zillertal Alps in South Tyrol, Italy. Situated at 2,307 metres above sea level on the Pfannealm at the end of the Valler Valley, it lies on the Pfunderer Höhenweg, a popular long-distance hiking trail. The hut offers simple accommodation with 35 mattress spaces in a dormitory, warm meals featuring South Tyrolean specialities made from regional ingredients, and is classified as family-friendly by the Alpine Club. It serves as a base for ascents of the Wilde Kreuzspitze (3,132 m) and the Wurmaulspitze (3,022 m), as well as excursions to the Wilder See (2,532 m). The hut is accessible from the south via the upper Valler Valley through the Fane alpine village and the Schramme gorge, or from the north via the Pfitscher Valley over the Sandjoch (2,842 m). The current hut, built by the AVS, was opened on 2 September 1973, replacing an earlier structure that had fallen into disrepair after World War II. The original hut on the site was opened on 18 July 1909 by the Brixen section of the Deutscher und Österreichischer Alpenverein (DuÖAV), after the section acquired a disused hunting lodge. It was expanded in 1911, but was expropriated by the Italian state in 1923 and handed to the Brixen section of the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI), which operated it until World War II. Today, the Brixner Hütte is a welcoming refuge for hikers, families, and mountaineers exploring the Zillertal Alps, managed by hosts Alexa and Simon.

History

The history of the Brixner Hütte begins in 1908, when geologist Raimund von Klebelsberg proposed the construction of a hut in the Pfunderer Berge area. Shortly thereafter, the Brixen section of the Deutscher und Österreichischer Alpenverein (DuÖAV) acquired a disused hunting lodge, which was converted into the first Schutzhütte on the site and opened on 18 July 1909. This initial hut was a small, self-catering shelter without permanent staff. In 1911, the hut was expanded for the first time. However, in 1923, the Italian state expropriated the building and transferred it to the Brixen section of the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI). The CAI operated the shelter until World War II, after which it fell into disrepair. The current hut, built by the Alpenverein Südtirol (AVS), was opened on 2 September 1973. Since then, it has served as a key refuge on the Pfunderer Höhenweg, welcoming hikers, families, and mountaineers. The hut is currently managed by hosts Alexa and Simon, who provide warm meals and maintain the family-friendly atmosphere.
