Overview

The Brigade Veterans Association (Norwegian: Brigadeveteranforbundet) is a Norwegian membership organisation for personnel who have served in the Norwegian Army's Germany Brigade, the Brigade in Northern Norway or Brigade North. It was formally founded on 18 November 2003 under the name Brigaden i Nord-Norge – Veteranforbundet, following a 2003 commemorative event marking the 50th anniversary of the Brigade in Northern Norway. The association publishes a member magazine, Brigadeavisa, and maintains local branches across Norway. Membership is open to military and civilian personnel who have served at least three months in the qualifying units. The association is based in Bardufoss and remains active, representing the interests and fellowship of brigade veterans.

History

The Brigade Veterans Association was formally established on 18 November 2003 under the name Brigaden i Nord-Norge – Veteranforbundet. Its creation followed a commemorative event held from 27 to 29 June 2003, when the 6th Division Command marked the 375th anniversary of the Norwegian Armed Forces, including the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Brigade in Northern Norway. An ad hoc committee called the "Markeringskomiteen Brig N 50 år" (Commemoration Committee Brig N 50 Years) was responsible for the brigade veterans' part of the event. During the gathering, many attendees asked the committee to take the initiative to establish a new veterans' association with local branches. The committee did so, and on 18 November 2003 the new association was founded with an interim board that would operate according to an adopted work plan until the association's first national meeting from 23 to 25 April 2004. At the association's national meeting on 20 June 2013, its name was changed to Brigadeveteranforbundet to include veterans from the Germany Brigade, the Brigade in Northern Norway and Brigade North, as well as any successor organisations. The association publishes a member magazine, Brigadeavisa, which first appeared in June 2004 after the president proposed establishing a member magazine for the association's first national meeting in April of that year. It was agreed that the magazine would be named "Brigadeavisa" and published twice a year, with the possibility of more issues if circumstances allowed. The magazine has been published continuously since 2004, typically with three issues per year (around Easter, after the summer and at Christmas), and is available digitally as PDF. The association accepts membership applications from persons who have served (military) or been employed (civilian) for at least three months at the Norwegian Army's Germany Brigade, the Brigade in Northern Norway or Brigade North. It maintains local branches, such as the Stor-Oslo brigadeveteranforening and the Midt-Troms brigadeveteranforening, and participates in events such as the Liberation and Veterans Day on 8 May.
