Overview

Bride Valley Vineyard is an English wine estate in Litton Cheney, West Dorset, planted in 2009 by the late Steven Spurrier — the wine merchant, writer and tastemaker best known for organising the 1976 'Judgement of Paris' tasting. Spurrier planted the traditional Champagne varieties Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier on his wife Bella's sheep farm, on south-facing slopes over limestone-rich, chalky Kimmeridgian soils that the estate describes as virtually identical to those of Champagne. The vineyard now holds over 48,000 vines across roughly 10 hectares and sits near Dorset's Jurassic Coast, a short drive from Dorchester, Bridport and Weymouth. The estate produces single-estate English sparkling wines and still wines. Its range includes Brut Reserve, Rosé Bella, Blanc de Blancs, Dorset Crémant, Dorset Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, sold both as single bottles and in cases, alongside branded glassware and gift packaging. From its debut 2011 vintage the wines earned acclaim for a crisp, precise style, and the brand positions itself as an English sparkling wine able to rival the finest in the world. Bottle prices on the official site range from around £25 for the Dorset Chardonnay 2022 to £40 for the Blanc de Blancs 2018. Bride Valley also operates as a wine tourism destination, offering guided vineyard tours and tastings from its tasting room, marketed as one of the best vineyard experiences in Dorset and near the Jurassic Coast. Following Steven Spurrier's death, the estate entered a new chapter under the stewardship of Alasdair Warren, a neighbour whose family has deep Dorset orcharding and cider-making roots — his grandfather Hubert Warren founded Warrens Cider in Netherbury in 1922. The business remains privately held and is sold principally in the United Kingdom.

History

Bride Valley Vineyard was founded in 2009 by Steven Spurrier, the globally renowned wine expert and merchant best known for organising the 1976 'Judgement of Paris' tasting, in which Californian wines triumphed over their French counterparts in a blind tasting. After decades championing wines around the world, Spurrier returned home to Dorset and planted a vineyard of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier on his wife Bella's sheep farm in Litton Cheney. The land's chalk-rich soils — described by the estate as mirroring those of a very well-known French region — provided the foundation for his ambition to craft elegant English sparkling wines that could stand alongside the world's best. From Bride Valley's debut vintage in 2011, the wines quickly earned acclaim for their crisp, precise style, including the Brut Reserve, Bella Rosé Sparkling and Blanc de Blancs, each reflecting the purity of the Dorset terroir and meticulous craftsmanship. The vineyard was planted on south-facing slopes over limestone-rich, chalky Kimmeridgian soils, and today comprises over 48,000 vines across roughly 10 hectares, situated near Dorset's Jurassic Coast and a short drive from Dorchester, Bridport and Weymouth. Spurrier was also a storyteller and host, welcoming visitors to the estate and sharing his knowledge. Following his death, Bride Valley entered a new chapter under the stewardship of Alasdair Warren, a neighbour with deep local roots: his family had been making cider in the region for generations, and his grandfather Hubert Warren was among the notable cider-makers of Netherbury, founding Warrens Cider in 1922. Spurrier and Warren had long been in talks about Warren's involvement with the vineyard. With a shared commitment to quality and the celebration of local terroir, Warren brought fresh energy to Bride Valley while continuing its focus on single-estate English sparkling and still wines.
