Overview
Brewpub De Kromme Haring is a Dutch craft brewery and brewpub based in Utrecht, the Netherlands. The name, which translates roughly to "The Crooked Herring," was conjured up by co-founder Stephen Grigg. The brewery was founded in 2014 by Grigg, a biologist and homebrewer originally from America who moved to the Netherlands via the United Kingdom, and Gijs van Wiechen, a Utrecht local and beer enthusiast with roots near the Dutch-Belgian border. The two met through mutual friends in Utrecht after Gijs tasted one of Stephen's homebrews and was impressed. They began with contract brewing for local bars before opening their own brewpub at Europalaan in September 2016. The brewpub serves as both a production facility and a social hub, featuring a biergarten, hosting events, and offering pizza alongside their beers. De Kromme Haring brews a range of beers, from crushable everyday styles to experimental brews using different yeast cultures, informed by classic beer heritage while pushing boundaries. Their beers include names like Schinderhannes, Marrellomorpha, Tripletail, and Warmouth. The brewery has a webshop and distributes to local bars and beyond. In 2024, a safety recall was issued for a batch of Les Perles Du Homard bottles due to safety reasons. The company remains privately owned and operates primarily in the Netherlands.
History
De Kromme Haring was founded in 2014 by Stephen Grigg and Gijs van Wiechen. Stephen, a biologist and homebrewer, moved from America to the Netherlands via the United Kingdom, eventually settling in Utrecht at the University of Utrecht. Gijs, a Utrecht local with roots near the Dutch-Belgian border, was a beer aficionado who managed the famous Kafe Belgie. They met through mutual friends when Gijs was given one of Stephen's homebrews and was asked for his opinion. Impressed, Gijs teamed up with Stephen to turn their shared passion into a business. The name De Kromme Haring was conjured up by Stephen in a fever dream. The brewery began with contract brews for local bars. In September 2016, they opened their own brewpub at Europalaan in Utrecht, providing a home for their beers and a gathering place for friends. The brewpub features a biergarten and hosts events. Over the years, De Kromme Haring has expanded its beer range, including experimental brews with different yeast cultures. In 2024, a recall was issued for a batch of Les Perles Du Homard due to safety reasons.
