Overview
Brewery La Frasnoise (Brasserie La Frasnoise) is a small Belgian artisanal brewery based in Frasnes-lez-Buissenal, part of the municipality of Frasnes-lez-Anvaing in the province of Hainaut, in the Pays des Collines region. It was founded in 2004 by Bruno Delroisse, a former bookseller, who restored an old building next to the village church and installed a microbrewery there. The brewery produces high-fermentation beers with refermentation in the bottle, following traditional methods. Its brewhouse capacity is around eight hectolitres per week, with a 1,000-litre filtration tank and three fermentation and storage tanks purchased in Slovakia. The first beer brewed was the Frasnoise Givrée, a coppery blonde at 6.3% ABV, which won a Fourquet d'Argent at the Concours International de Saint-Nicolas-de-Port in 2007. In March 2009 a second beer, the Frasnoise Rétro, an amber at 6.5% ABV, was launched. Sales are largely local, including through a small tavern adjoining the brewery. On 1 May 2014 Bruno Delroisse was joined by his son Charles, then training in brewing at IFAPME; Charles brought new ideas and the two created the Tijézu', the first beer produced by father and son. Charles later graduated from the microbrewery option at FOCLAM in Tournai. In spring 2016 the range expanded with the Crasse Pinte, a cloudy blonde at 5.5% ABV made with a white-type yeast and named after a song by a friend of Bruno Delroisse, the Picard singer Xavier Thiebaut, and with the Bière d'Amour, a pinkish, fruity beer at 6% ABV created after a visit by the committee of the Sentier de l'Amour. The brewery remains a family-run, private operation focused on traditional Belgian beer styles and local distribution.
History
Brewery La Frasnoise was founded in 2004 by Bruno Delroisse, a former bookseller, in a restored old building next to the village church of Frasnes-lez-Buissenal, in the municipality of Frasnes-lez-Anvaing, Hainaut, in the Pays des Collines. Delroisse explained his motivation: he was tired of staying behind his counter all day and had always loved beer, feeling nostalgic for the glory years of beer when many villages had their own breweries. In 2005 he recounted that setting up a microbrewery required skills he acquired by attending meetings and conferences with specialists, who encouraged him to persevere despite his neophyte status. He also had to find equipment, which was very expensive when bought new; an extensive search allowed him to acquire second-hand equipment, transform it, and adapt it to his goal. Before launching, he conducted market research to identify where the best beers of the time were made, particularly regarding water quality, and noted that Frasnes had an excellent reputation. The small company produces high-fermentation beers with refermentation in the bottle using traditional methods. The filtration tank has a capacity of 1,000 litres, and the three fermentation and storage tanks were purchased in Slovakia. Brewing capacity is eight hectolitres per week. The first beer brewed was the Frasnoise Givrée. In March 2009 a second beer, the Frasnoise Rétro, was launched. Sales are largely local, including in a small tavern adjoining the brewery. On 1 May 2014 Bruno Delroisse was joined by his son Charles, who was then training in brewing at IFAPME. Charles brought new ideas, leading to the creation of the Tijézu', the first beer produced by the Delroisse father and son. Charles later graduated from the microbrewery option at FOCLAM in Tournai. In spring 2016 the brewery's range expanded with the Crasse Pinte, a cloudy blonde made with a white-type yeast, named after a song written by a friend of Bruno Delroisse, the Picard singer Xavier Thiebaut, and with the Bière d'Amour, created following a visit by the committee of the Sentier de l'Amour. Charles Delroisse explained that the Bière d'Amour was supposed to be released for Valentine's Day, but because natural aromas were used, it took longer than expected to fulfil the many orders. The brewery remains a family-run artisanal operation.
