History

In 1974, Karl Kilian opened Brazos Bookstore to encourage the growth and development of the emerging Houston literary scene with a clear focus on personalized service, community engagement and passionate curation. Larry McMurtry, Edward Albee, and Donald Barthelme were all regular customers during their times in Houston. The store supports writers and readers through long partnerships with Inprint!, the University of Houston Creative Writing Program, the River Oaks Theater, and the Annual Poet and Writer's Ball, and collaborates with Houston cultural organizations including the American Institute of Architects, Rice University and the Baker Institute, the Houston Public Library, and the Asia Society. Kilian announced his retirement in 2006 and had plans to close Brazos Bookstore after 32 years of fostering the Houston literary community; a group of about a dozen Houstonians came together and purchased the bookstore with the belief that the community deserved access to literature. The store remains cooperatively owned, with an ownership group that has grown to exceed 25 members represented by a board of seven investors.
