Overview

Braumanufaktur Potsdam is a German craft brewery and brewpub (Gasthausbrauerei) located in the historic Forsthaus Templin ensemble in the Templin district of Potsdam, near the Templiner See. The brewery was founded in 2003 by two Diplom-Braumeister (graduate brewmasters), Thomas Kirchhoff and Jörg Köhler, who bought the dilapidated building complex in 2002, renovated it, and opened the restaurant as a brewpub on 6 December 2003. The site itself has a long history as an excursion restaurant, dating back to a Tabagie established in 1834, and the name Forsthaus refers to a forestry house built after a fire in 1846. The brewery's philosophy centres on preserving old regional brewing traditions. From the beginning it has brewed the Potsdamer Stange, a beer style that has been brewed in the region for around 200 years, as well as Berliner Weisse and the Werdersche Bier, a historical style mentioned by Theodor Fontane in his travels through Brandenburg. The beers are produced using traditional craft methods, unfiltered and natural, with raw materials from certified organic cultivation. The brewery also produces related products such as Bierbrand (beer brandy), Bierlikör (beer liqueur) and Treberbrot (spent-grain bread). The brewpub offers a guest room with 100 seats displaying historical beer bottles, two separate rooms upstairs, and a beer garden. The copper brewhouse is located in the guest room, and two beer tanks stand at the sides of the beer garden. Cultural offerings include a petting zoo, free weekly brewery tours, and the organisation of festivals and music events. Occasional exhibitions are also held in the rooms. The establishment has received the Potsdamer Gastlichkeit seal several times since 2005 and a design award in 2009. Braumanufaktur Potsdam remains a privately owned, independent brewery and restaurant, deeply rooted in the Potsdam region and its brewing heritage.

History

The history of the site now occupied by Braumanufaktur Potsdam begins in 1756, when Christoph Andreas Martin(i), a manufacturer and supplier of barchent and canvas, acquired a bleaching ground in the Royal Heath near Caputh on the banks of the Havel. The estate, together with a larger dwelling house and two weaver's houses, soon became known as 'Martinis Bleiche'. Martin expanded his land down to the water by 1773, where a horn-shaped bank called Templin was particularly suitable for bleaching. He also planted walnut and mulberry trees from 1764 and laid out a garden with vegetables, fruit and flowers. In 1780 the estate passed to Martin's daughter and her husband Johann Christoph Brand, a barchent maker who continued to produce cloth there until 1796. The Marquis de Moustier, a religious refugee and former French envoy in Berlin, then acquired the property but left it unused and sold it in 1797 to the clergyman (canon) Arnold Diedrich Tamm. Tamm repaired all buildings and upgraded them into a manor. He ran a wood business on 60 Morgen, which soon became unprofitable. Through forced auction, the merchant Schulze from Potsdam became owner in 1814, but in 1815 the overbidder merchant Karl Ludwig Krüger from Berlin won the bid. No real use followed, so in 1819 Krüger sold the estate ('Luxusgütchen') for 7,500 talers to Lieutenant General Friedrich Adolf Ludwig von Bismarck. Further changes of ownership followed: in 1832 to privateer Ferdinand Schulenburg; in 1834 to merchant Eduard Reinhardt, who first operated parts of the buildings as an inn, then called a Tabagie; in 1837 Emilie Henriette Reinhard acquired it at auction; and in 1841 Amtmann Haupt leased the Tabagie and continued to run it. Already in the 1840s there were further changes of ownership, but the contracts gave the Prussian state a right of first refusal, which it exercised in 1842. In 1846 the former Tamm dwelling house (manor) and the stables burned down. The Prussian king personally ordered that a small 'Bavarian house' be built here, but this was not realised. Instead, a forestry house (Forsthaus) was built, into which royal forest officials moved. Plans to rebuild the manor were not carried out because of the 1848 revolution. The foresters continued to operate the buildings as an excursion restaurant, whose founding thus goes back to the Tabagie of 1834. Road construction (1849, 1958) made the inn more accessible. In the 1930s to 1940s the Gasthaus Templin experienced a great upswing. Around 4,000 seats including a beer garden attracted visitors, especially in summer. Potsdam and Berlin excursion boats also called at the restaurant, for which there were three steamer landing stages and nine jetties for private boat owners. A beach restaurant served bathers directly on the waterfront. After the Second World War the property fell to the state and excursion activities began anew; during the GDR era numerous visitors came again. To speed up service, the operator, the then HO, switched service for the HOG Forsthaus Templin to self-service. In 1959 the Strandbad Templin was created on the lake shore by filling with fine sand, bringing even more visitors to the restaurant. For film shoots, the DEFA had the restaurant area rebuilt by architects and craftsmen in 1967. With the Wende (turnaround), the Forsthaus Templin went into the real estate fund of the Treuhandanstalt due to the dissolution of the HO. In 1990 a private tenant was found, but he carried out hardly any maintenance and gave up. Between 1997 and 2002 the estate stood empty. In 2002 the graduate brewmasters Thomas Kirchhoff and Jörg Köhler bought the entire building ensemble and part of the grounds. They had everything renovated and converted and opened the restaurant on 6 December 2003 as a Gasthausbrauerei (brewpub). Since then, Braumanufaktur Potsdam has brewed traditional regional beers and operated as a cultural and culinary destination.
