Overview
Brauerei Spezial is a Bamberg brewery known for its Rauchbier (smoked beer). According to its own history page, beer has been brewed at its site on the former Steinweg — today Obere Königstraße 10 — for over 475 years, and the brewery describes itself as one of the last of the 22 breweries still documented in that street at the beginning of the 19th century. The brewery's founding is attributed, per a 1536 document, to the cooper Linhard Großkopf. The name 'Spezial' first appears in connection with a former owner, Nikolas Delscher. The brewery also runs a brewery inn (Brauerei-Gasthof) with regular opening hours, and it offers beer-education courses in cooperation with the DOEMENS academy.
History
According to the brewery's own history page, beer has been brewed at its site on the former Steinweg — an old, supra-regionally important trade route — for over 475 years. That road had run since the Middle Ages as part of a European north-south main connection from Erfurt through Bamberg toward Nuremberg and Augsburg and onward over the Via Claudia Augusta across the Alps to Verona. Over the centuries numerous inns arose along the route, and the Königstraße became an important transshipment point. The brewery states that it is one of the last of the 22 breweries still documented in the street at the beginning of the 19th century. The brewery property at Obere Königstraße 10 is described as an ideal-typical example of a 16th-century brewing operation; despite numerous conversions and new buildings over the centuries, the historic front building, whose core is dated to around 1450, remains the heart of the four-sided complex, distinguished by its listed half-timbered facade. In the rear courtyard stands the likewise historic brewhouse, dated by an inscription to 1742, a date confirmed by recent dendrochronological investigations. The former stables now house the modern bottling facility. Per a document from 1536, the founder of the brewing site is considered to be the cooper Linhard Großkopf, whose family at that time still owned several other brewing sites on the Steinweg. The name 'Spezial' first appears in connection with the former owner Nikolas Delscher.
