Overview

Schwechater Bier is an Austrian beer brand whose brewery history reaches back to 1632, when Peter Descrolier founded the Klein-Schwechat brewery. The brand presents itself as standing for both tradition and innovation, reflected in its recipes and in awards at renowned competitions. Its beer range includes Lager, Zwickl, Wiener Lager and Alkoholfrei.

History

The history of the Schwechater brewery reaches back to 1632. In that year Peter Descrolier, chamberlain and paymaster of Archduke Matthias, founded the Klein-Schwechat brewery. The success story of Schwechater Bier began in 1760 when Franz Anton Dreher came to Vienna as a waiter and leased the Ober-Lanzendorf brewery. In 1782 he also leased the brewhouse "Im unteren Werd" and ran it with notable success. In 1796 Franz Anton Dreher acquired the Klein-Schwechat brewery for 19,000 guilders, together with 46 Joch of fields in the Frauenfeld and 32 Joch in the Unteren Feld, as well as two Tagwerk of meadows on the Liesing, 1 1/2 Tagwerk of garden and the Herberghäusl. At the age of 74 he became father of a son, Anton, who in later years was responsible for the brewery's success story. Anton Dreher sen. was born in 1810 and lost his father Franz Anton at the early age of 10. His mother managed with difficulty to save the brewery from bankruptcy, continued to run it with her second husband and, after a four-year lease, sold it to her son only in 1840 for 24,000 guilders. Before that Anton followed the old brewmaster custom, practising in the Simmering brewery and going on a longer study and research trip with the Munich brewer's son Gabriel Sedlmayr.
