Overview
Brauerei Max Leibinger GmbH is a family-owned brewery based in Ravensburg in the Upper Swabia region of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It traces its origins to a brewery founded on the site in 1862, which Max Leibinger acquired in 1894; since then the business has remained in the hands of the Leibinger family. The brewery sits on a hill in Ravensburg that locals call the 'Bierbuckel' (beer hump), and it describes itself as the home brewery of the city, closely tied to the Lake Constance–Upper Swabia region. The company brews a broad portfolio of regional beer specialties. Its range covers around 16 refreshing specialties including dark, pale, naturally cloudy and alcohol-free beers as well as Radler shandies. Core products include Edel, Pils, Helles vom Bierbuckel, Alkoholfrei vom Bierbuckel, Dunkles Weizen, the Seeweisse wheat beer family (including Seeweisse Dunkel, Seeweisse Leicht and Seeweisse Alkoholfrei), Eiskeller, and the Seeradler range (classic, grapefruit, naturtrüb, sauer and alcohol-free). The brewery also produces two alcohol-free soft drinks under the Seebrause name: Zitrone-Ingwer and Johannisbeere. Raw materials, including hops from Tettnang, are sourced from the Bodensee-Oberschwaben region, and the company emphasizes traditional brewing craft, regional ingredients, careful recipes and long maturation. Leibinger has been an innovator in its region: in 1901 it brought the first bottled beer in the area to market. In the post-war decades the brewery was modernized, and in 1996 Michael Leibinger, a qualified brewmaster, joined the company and developed the Max 5,2 drink; he took over management in 2000. The Seeradler brand was introduced in 2002. After the closure of the Bürgerliches Brauhaus in 2001, Brauerei Max Leibinger became the only remaining brewery in Ravensburg. The brewery is known locally for the Bierbuckelfest, an annual festival held on its premises since 1986, opened by the managing director with a traditional keg tapping and featuring live music and a 'Bierathlon' competition. The company remains privately held by the Leibinger family and markets itself with the slogan that its beer contains '100 percent home' and trust.
History
The tradition of brewing on the 'Bierbuckel' in Ravensburg predates the Leibinger brewery itself: a brewery was first founded on the site in 1862. In 1892 the postal keeper Benedikt Birk took it over as the 'Benediktiner-Brauerei'. In 1894 Max Leibinger acquired the brewery, marking the beginning of the history of Brauerei Max Leibinger, which has remained in family ownership ever since. Max Leibinger was open to technical innovation. In 1901 he brought the first bottled beer in the region to market. At that time the brewery's vehicle fleet counted 17 horses, three mules and six oxen. With the purchase of the first truck in 1914, eight of the horses became superfluous. The First World War and the mobilization in the summer of that year hit the brewery hard: all younger employees, the new truck with its driver and eight horses were called up, and older employees kept the operation running. With the end of the First World War better times returned. Thanks to his entrepreneurial spirit, Max expanded the brewery building and between 1918 and 1922 bought up several surrounding breweries. His son Robert Leibinger, following family tradition a young brewmaster, took over the running of the brewery from 1922. After the founder Max died in 1927, Robert had to witness in 1942 how the company was hit by a phosphorus bomb from Allied aircraft and almost completely burned down. Brewing was suspended for a whole year. Robert Leibinger died shortly after the war; his widow and their two children Max and Doris took over the initiated reconstruction and later modernized on a large scale. From 1946 the position of brewery director was held by Jost Metzler. When Robert Leibinger's son Max joined the company in 1959, the brewery was comprehensively modernized. In 1996 Diplom-Braumeister Michael Leibinger joined the company and developed the beverage Max 5,2. In 2000 he took over the management of the company. In 2002 the Seeradler brand was introduced. After the closure of the 'Bürgerliches Brauhaus' in 2001, Brauerei Max Leibinger became the only remaining brewery in Ravensburg. The brewery continues to operate on the Bierbuckel in Ravensburg, brewing its Upper Swabian beer specialties with regional raw materials, including hops from Tettnang. It describes itself as closely connected to the city and the Lake Constance–Upper Swabia region, and its product range stands for quality, innovation, variety and home. Since 1986 the brewery has hosted the annual Bierbuckelfest on its premises, opened by the managing director with a keg tapping and featuring live music and a 'Bierathlon' competition; the first festival was held to launch the naturally cloudy dark specialty 'Leibinger Bierbuckel'.
