Overview
Brauerei G.A. Bruch is a German brewery based in Saarbrücken, Saarland, and is one of the oldest and most traditional breweries in the region. Founded in 1702 by Johann Daniel Bruch, it began as a small brewpub in the guesthouse "Zum Stiefel" at the St. Johanner Markt. The brewery has remained in the Bruch family for generations and is currently led by Thomas Bruch. In 1899, under Gustav Bruch, the brewery moved to Scheidter Straße in Saarbrücken, where modern brewing technologies were adopted to increase production and quality. The company was entered in the commercial register on 18 April 1900. Today, the brewery employs around twenty people and produces approximately 30,000 hectoliters of beer annually. Its product range includes classic Pilsener, Zwickel, Landbier, Saarbrücker Hell, Weizen, and seasonal specialties like Wadgasser Klosterbräu and Festbock. The beers are sold primarily in the Saarbrücken region and throughout Saarland, with no distribution outside the state. The brewery has faced challenges, including a filing for insolvency in 2018 due to a tax repayment, and later a regular insolvency procedure following the COVID-19 pandemic, but it continues to operate and uphold its brewing tradition.
History
Brauerei G.A. Bruch was founded in 1702 by Johann Daniel Bruch as a small brewpub in the guesthouse "Zum Stiefel" at the St. Johanner Markt in Saarbrücken. This historic location remained in the possession of the Bruch family until 2021 and was used as a popular restaurant. The brewery underwent continuous development under various generations of the Bruch family. Gustav Bruch, a significant descendant of the founder, managed the business at the end of the 19th century and laid the foundation for the brewery's modern orientation. In 1899, a major milestone was achieved with the move to Scheidter Straße in Saarbrücken, where production could be significantly increased through the use of modern brewing technologies, contributing to the high quality and popularity of Bruch beers. Under Gustav Bruch's leadership, the brewery became a symbol of Saarbrücken lifestyle, and its beers enjoyed great popularity not only in the state capital. On 18 April 1900, the company was registered in the commercial register of the Saarbrücken district court. In the following decades, the brewery was always managed by family members who maintained traditions and further developed the brand. Lukas Bruch took over as the 9th generation. Today, the brewery employs around twenty people and has an annual production of approximately 30,000 hectoliters. The beers are primarily sold in the Saarbrücken region and throughout Saarland, with no sales outside the state. In addition to the Bruch No.1, a classic pils, the brewery produces various beer types such as Bruch Zwickel (a naturally cloudy zwickelbier), Bruch Weizen (a naturally cloudy weizenbier), SaarGold (a helles), and Landbier 1702 (a dunkel). It also produces a shandy with cola and a non-alcoholic version. Since 2008, Bruch has brewed Bruch Weizen, a weizenbier that, in addition to the famous half-liter bottles, is also bottled in three-liter Steinieforms. In 2011, the brewery produced Wadgasser Klosterbräu again for the first time, a seasonal bock with a higher original wort. The 2012 vintage was launched in mid-December 2011 in a quantity of 100 hectoliters. Another seasonal beer is the Festbock, a strong bock in winter. On 27 June 2018, the brewery filed for insolvency due to a tax repayment of several hundred thousand euros. As a result of a loan, there were no layoffs or salary reductions. Following the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated decline in sales, the insolvency was abandoned and the company began regular bankruptcy proceedings.
