Overview

Brauerei Albert Egger AG is a Swiss brewery based in Worb, Canton Bern, producing the Egger Bier range. It was founded in 1863 by Gottfried Egger, and the first Egger beer was served on New Year's Day 1864 after the church sermon. The brewery remains family-named and regionally rooted, brewing with hops, malt, yeast and water from its own spring, which Gottfried Egger acquired and which still supplies the brewery today. The company describes itself as agile, independent, innovative and courageous, committed to keeping brewing in the village of Worb. Egger Bier is known for a diverse portfolio of unfiltered and specialty beers, including the original naturally cloudy Zwickelbier, the monthly changing Monatsbier, and character-driven brands such as Hopfer, Maximus and Pilot. The brewery also produces light lagers, dark and light specialty beers, bock, honey beer, reduced-alcohol and alcohol-free beers. Its beers are sold across Switzerland, and the brewery operates an online shop for home delivery as well as a brewery shop (Braui-Lädeli) in Worb. A distinctive local tradition is the Friday afternoon "Zwickeln" on the brewery's legendary ramp, where the Zwickelautomat attracts people from near and far. The brewery positions itself as bringing Bernese character into the glass, with beers that have "edges and corners" and are inspired by real personalities. The team is led by managing director and brewmaster David Santschi, with brewing, sales, events and retail staff based in Worb.

History

Brauerei Albert Egger was founded in 1863 by Gottfried Egger in Worb, Canton Bern, Switzerland. The brewery's own history page recounts that with the invention of the refrigerator and the steam railway, brewing technology in Switzerland developed rapidly, allowing breweries to produce beer year-round. Gottfried Egger recognized the potential and founded the brewery. On New Year's Day 1864, after the sermon, he served his first self-brewed beer, and the whole tavern rejoiced over the new brew. Previously, fresh beer was available in the village at most during the summer months; now one could tap one or two "Herrgöttchen" year-round at Gottfried's. The brewery continued under the Egger family. Albert Egger took over the brewery, and the good prospects did not cloud. However, during World War II, in the 75th anniversary year of 1938, hard times broke for the then managing director Hans Egger, as beer consumption dropped drastically. Fortunately, after the war, beer flowed plentifully again into parched throats, and punctually for the 100th anniversary (as the history page continues), the brewery could look back on a century of existence. The brewery remains in Worb and is now known as Brauerei Albert Egger AG. It emphasizes its regional roots and independence, brewing with hops, malt, yeast and water from its own spring, which Gottfried Egger acquired and which still supplies excellent water quality. The company states it wants to remain agile and independent, innovative and courageous, so that beer continues to be brewed in the village in the future. Because Egger Bier is too good to be drunk only in Worb, the brewery welcomes new regulars' tables from all over Switzerland, under the motto "Egger macht die Runde!" (Egger makes the rounds). Over the decades, the product range has expanded to include a variety of beers, from traditional lagers and Zwickelbier to specialty, bock, honey, low-alcohol and alcohol-free beers. The brewery has also become a local social hub, notably through the Friday afternoon "Zwickeln" on its legendary ramp, where the Zwickelautomat attracts young and old from near and far. The team today includes managing director and brewmaster David Santschi and a staff covering brewing, sales, events and the Braui-Lädeli shop.
