Overview
Brauerei Adler is a Swiss brewery based in Schwanden in the canton of Glarus. Founded in 1828, it is the oldest surviving brewery in Glarnerland and remains in family ownership. The brewery is a member of the Interessengemeinschaft unabhängiger Klein- und Mittelbrauereien (interest group of independent small and medium-sized breweries) and produces roughly 9,000 hectoliters of beer per year. The brewery traces its origins to Fridolin Tschudi (1771–1847), a cantonal councilor who also ran a wine business and established the inn and brewery in 1829. His sons continued the operation until it was sold to Gustav Kauth of Lucerne. After Kauth's death, Paulus Kundert (1850–1917) joined as a partner, and the firm continued as Kauth und Kundert. From 1925, Fritz Kundert-Streiff (1895–1960) ran the brewery and inn independently, followed by his son-in-law Paul Torgler-Kundert (1913–1996). Today the company is managed by Ruth and Roland Oeschger in the fourth generation and is owned by Meta Oeschger-Kundert (daughter of Fritz Kundert-Streiff) and her son Roland Oeschger. A new brewhouse has been in operation since 1995. Brauerei Adler's product range centers on traditional Swiss beer styles. Its best-selling beer is Adlerbräu Lager, a pale lager sold in 33-cl and 58-cl bottles and 10-liter kegs at 4.8% ABV. A pale specialty beer is sold as Panix-Perle in 29-cl bottles and as Bügel-Spez in returnable swing-top bottles at 5.2% ABV. Glarner Zwickelbier is offered in 29-cl, 1-liter and 2-liter bottles. A dark beer, Fridolin Kundert Bräu, honors the founder's namesake and is sold in 29-cl and 58-cl bottles at 5.2% ABV. Seasonal specialties include Adler Festbier and Adler Bockbier for Christmas and Easter. Glarner Adlerpfiff Panaché is a mixed drink of 60% Adlerbräu and 40% Elmer Citro at 2.9% ABV. Under the label «Saagehafts usem Glarnerland», introduced in 2015, the brewery launched a line of specialty beers named after Glarner legends, including Rufelihund (American Pale Ale) and Vrenelisgärtli (Witbier) in spring 2015, followed by Geisser (Bockbier) and Schrättli (Session IPA) at the end of 2015. Kellerbier is a pale, naturally cloudy lager. The brewery also offers Sommerbier, Single Malt Whisky, and Getränkeservice (beverage delivery service) according to its website. Brauerei Adler remains a small, regionally focused craft brewery with a strong local identity in Glarus.
